Bos taurus
Cattle, scientifically known as Bos taurus, are large, domesticated ungulates that play a pivotal role in agriculture across the globe. Originating from wild ancestors, such as the aurochs, cattle are now found in various breeds tailored for specific purposes, including beef, milk production, and draught power. They are characterized by a robust body, cloven hooves, and a distinctive ruminant digestive system that enables them to efficiently extract nutrients from fibrous plant material through a multi-chambered stomach. Cattle have a social structure and are often observed forming close bonds within herds. The species exhibits sexual dimorphism, with males, or bulls, displaying larger builds and often possessing prominent horns, while females, known as cows, are primarily esteemed for their milk production capabilities. In addition, cattle contribute to ecosystems by influencing plant communities and serving as prey for various predators. However, their widespread domestication and husbandry practices also pose environmental challenges, such as habitat alteration and greenhouse gas emissions. Despite these issues, cattle remain integral to human societies, providing meat, milk, leather, and other resources essential for various cultural, economic, and nutritional needs.
