Shorthorn

Shorthorn cattle originated in northeastern England, especially the Tees Valley, Durham, and Yorkshire, and became one of the most influential cattle breeds in the English-speaking world. The breed developed from local cattle selected in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries for size, milk, beef, and predictable inheritance. Shorthorns are best known in red, white, and roan coats, with both horned and polled lines found today. Modern populations are often divided into Beef Shorthorn and Milking or Dairy Shorthorn strains, though their history is closely connected.

Beef producers use Shorthorns for maternal ability, docility, carcass quality, and crossbreeding value, while dairy strains are kept for milk solids, grazing ability, and practical cow longevity. Because the name covers different national registries and production types, buyers should look beyond color and ask whether a herd is selected for beef, dairy, or dual-purpose work. Calving ease, udder quality, feet, temperament, and performance records are useful guides. Shorthorns fit many temperate pasture systems, but they still need ordinary cattle management, including balanced nutrition, parasite control, and facilities suited to the size and horn status of the animals.
