Australian Charbray
Australian Charbray cattle are a beef composite based on Charolais and Brahman ancestry, developed to suit hot Australian production areas. They are usually pale cream, white, or light red cattle with strong muscling and rapid growth from the Charolais side, plus added skin area, heat tolerance, and parasite resilience from Brahman influence. Mature animals tend to be larger framed than many tropical composites, so the breed is often chosen where weight gain and carcass yield are major goals.
Charbray bulls are widely used over Brahman, crossbred, and commercial cows to produce heavy weaners or feeder cattle, but birth weight and cow size deserve attention when planning matings. In northern herds, management focuses on fertility in hot conditions, sound feet and legs, temperament, and enough nutrition to support growth without overburdening breeders on dry-season pasture. Buyers should ask about the Charolais-to-Brahman balance, polled status, and calving history, since Australian Charbray herds are not all selected the same way.
