Brown Swiss
Brown Swiss cattle descend from the brown cattle of the Swiss Alps, where strength, grazing ability, and milk production were selected together. Modern dairy Brown Swiss are large, calm cattle ranging from light silver-brown to dark brown, usually with a dark muzzle bordered by a pale ring and strong, dark hooves. Their milk is often valued for protein and cheese yield, while the broader Brown Swiss and Braunvieh family includes both highly dairy-selected and more dual-purpose lines.
On farms, Brown Swiss are used in commercial dairies, cheese-milk herds, family milk cow programs, and crossbreeding where feet, longevity, and components are priorities. They tend to mature a little later than some dairy breeds, so heifer growth and age at first calving should be planned rather than rushed. Large mature cows and bulls require secure facilities and low-stress handling. As with any productive dairy cattle, nutrition, udder health, reproduction, and hoof maintenance determine whether their durability is actually realized in the herd.
