Maine-Anjou
The Maine-Anjou is a distinguished French cattle breed known for its exceptional size, versatility, and meat quality. Originating in the Maine and Anjou regions of France, this breed was initially developed in the early 19th century by crossing the local Mancelle cows with the English Durham (Shorthorn). Maine-Anjou cattle exhibit a striking appearance, characterized by a large frame and a distinctive deep red coat with white markings, though some individuals may also be solid black or feature more white.
Renowned for their excellent muscle development and growth rate, Maine-Anjou cattle are often sought after for beef production. Their meat is highly praised for its marbling and tenderness, aligning with consumer preferences for high-quality beef. Alongside their admirable carcass qualities, these cattle are valued for their docile temperament, making them relatively easy to manage. Additionally, their strong legs and sound feet make them well-adapted to various terrains and climates, which has contributed to their international success and adaptability.
In recent years, Maine-Anjou cattle have also been favored in crossbreeding programs to enhance the traits of other breeds, thanks to their inherent growth efficiency and meat excellence. Whether in purebred operations or used in commercial crossbreeding systems, the Maine-Anjou continues to be a notable and versatile breed in the beef industry.
