Monchina

Monchina cattle are a small, hardy Spanish breed from the Cantabrian mountain area, especially parts of Cantabria, northern Burgos, and nearby Basque country. They developed under extensive grazing in rough, wooded hills, and many herds retain a semi-feral character. Animals are usually compact and agile, with dark chestnut, blackish, or brown coats, lighter markings around the muzzle or eyes in some lines, and upward-curving horns. Once tied to local subsistence farming and meat production, the breed is now best known as an endangered native beef breed adapted to marginal pasture.

Keeping Monchina cattle calls for experience with independent hill cattle. They are suited to range or mountain systems where cows can walk, browse, and calve with limited assistance, but gathering, sorting, and veterinary work require strong fences and a calm handling setup. Conservation herds focus on maternal ability, hard feet, disease resilience, and maintaining the local genetic base rather than maximizing carcass size. For buyers outside the region, availability, transport health rules, and temperament are bigger issues than color. These cattle fit stewardship grazing and heritage beef programs better than close-contact hobby farms.

How Much Does a Cow Cost? Beef, Dairy, and Bottle Calf Prices in 2026

A cow costs more right now than at any point in history. In mid-2026, plan on roughly $2,500 to $3,500 for a commercial bred beef cow, $4,000 to $6,000 for a cow-calf pair, and $3,000 to $4,400 for a good dairy cow, with registered and top-end animals selling well above those ranges. Even a weaned […]

What to Feed Cattle: Forage, Hay, and Supplement Basics

Feed cattle forage first. Cattle are ruminants, built to turn grass and other forages into meat and milk, so the base of nearly every beef diet is grazed pasture in the growing season and conserved forage (hay, silage, or baleage) through winter. Everything else, protein and energy supplements, minerals, and grain, exists to fill the […]

Calf Growth Chart: Record Weights and Read the Trend

A calf growth chart is a dated series of actual or clearly labeled estimated weights tied to one animal ID. It can reveal a trend and guide a conversation with a veterinarian or nutrition adviser, but it cannot diagnose why growth changed. Start a cattle profile, then record each measurement consistently. The cattle breed index […]

How Long Do Cows Live? Cattle Lifespan on Farms and as Pets
