Shire

The Shire is a large English draft horse shaped by farm work, road haulage, brewery drays, and heavy urban transport in the Midland and fen counties. A modern Shire typically stands tall with great depth of body, a long shoulder, substantial bone, and silky feather below the knees and hocks. Black, bay, brown, and gray are traditional colors; excessive white and coarse feather may be viewed differently depending on the registry. Although descended from heavy working stock rather than designed sport horses, good Shires can move with reach and balance, which is why they remain valued in harness and ridden draft classes.

Keeping a Shire means planning for scale. Stalls, trailers, fencing, farrier equipment, and feed budgets must suit a horse that may weigh close to a ton, and young horses need time to mature before demanding work. Feather should be kept clean and checked for mites, scratches, and chronic skin irritation, especially in wet climates. Many Shires are steady to handle, but early groundwork is important because sheer size makes rude handling habits unsafe. Breeders and conservation groups pay close attention to fertility, sound feet and legs, and genetic diversity as draft horse numbers remain far below their working-era peak.
