Mare Foaling Preparation Timeline: Worked Date and Veterinary Milestones

Mare Foaling Preparation Timeline: Worked Date and Veterinary Milestones

Author: Elliott Garber, DVM · Published

A foaling calendar turns a mare’s breeding information into a window for observation and preparation. The free horse gestation calculator gives an estimate from the date you enter. It cannot confirm pregnancy or predict the exact night a foal will arrive. Keep the mare’s actual records beside the projection and compare breeds on the horse index only for context.

Start with the breeding record

Write the mare’s ID, stallion, service method and dates. If there were multiple services, retain each rather than choosing the one that makes a preferred due date. Record examination findings separately, with the veterinarian’s date and conclusion. The horse gestation guide explains why a range is more useful than a single countdown. The horse stud-fee guide covers agreements and costs that belong with breeding decisions but not in a medical due-date estimate.

The mare’s body condition and care plan matter more than the breed label. A Percheron and a Westphalian may have different management contexts; ask your equine veterinarian about the individual mare.

Work a service date into a mare-specific plan

Extension Horses’ pregnant-mare guide gives 335 to 340 days as an average and a broad 320 to 370 day range. A mare bred January 1, 2027 has a 340-day planning marker of December 7, 2027, but that broad example span runs November 17, 2027 to January 6, 2028. Prior foaling history and veterinary findings should shape the actual watch plan. The horse gestation guide remains the canonical date-depth page.

When
Add to the mare’s plan
During pregnancy
Ask the veterinarian about pregnancy checks and an EHV-1 prevention schedule. AAEP’s EHV guidance covers pregnant mares; the clinician chooses products and dates.
4 to 6 weeks before the expected window
Review the pre-foaling booster plan with the veterinarian; AAEP explains the colostrum goal. Prepare a clean foaling area and emergency contact.
Through the watch window
Record behavior and physical changes separately from the calculator date; use the foaling guide for urgent signs.
After foaling
Replace the projection with the birth time, foal identity, veterinary findings and follow-up plan.

Prepare the people and space

Use the projected window to plan a safe, clean foaling area, an observation routine, emergency contact and a route to veterinary care. The foaling guide explains normal signs and urgent situations. Call a veterinarian promptly for distress, abnormal presentation or concerns about the mare or foal. A calculator must never delay clinical help.

On Creatures, a Breeding record can hold the service information and projected window. The Breeding dashboard helps you see which mares are approaching their dates; reminders can schedule checks. The Help Center guides to recording a breeding, tracking pregnancy and recording a birth show the sequence. A free account saves these records.

Enter the breeding date to plan a foaling window, then track the mare’s actual observations separately.

After foaling, note the actual date, foal ID, known sire and dam, veterinary observations and any complications. Save original breeding and registration documents. A complete record will be more useful to the next keeper than a calendar entry that simply says “due.”

Keep the sire and dam identities with the breeding record. The horse pedigree papers guide shows how to match studbook records and parentage claims before mapping documented ancestors.
