G6S deficiency (N-acetylglucosamine-6-sulfatase deficiency, also called MPS IIID) is a recessive storage disease of Nubian goats and breeds derived from them. A kid with two copies of the nonsense mutation in the GNS gene shows slow motor development, poor growth and often early death. Carriers look normal and are found by DNA testing.
Goats show G6S Deficiency only with two copies. One copy makes a carrier, which looks normal but can pass G6S Deficiency on.
Proven by DNA. G6S deficiency is recessive; a carrier is not affected.
Two copies cause G6S deficiency: kids show nervous system signs, slow development and poor growth, and severe cases die young, though milder forms are described.
Results are written N/N (clear), N/G (carrier) and G/G (affected). Test Nubian and Nubian-derived goats before breeding. About 1 in 4 Nubians tested at TVMDL carried it; that sample is not a rate for every herd.
