How Long Do Goats Live? Goat Lifespan by Sex, Use, and Management

A goat that is fed well, wormed sensibly, and never culled will usually live into its low-to-mid teens. Washington State University Extension teaches 10 to 15 years as the average for the species, and the captive-longevity record compiled in the AnAge database puts the verified maximum at 20.8 years, held by one female, with a 22-year animal reported but unverified.

The number most goats actually reach is nothing like that, and the reason is not biology. In a New Zealand study of 13,197 dairy does, the average age at removal from the herd was 1,644 days, a little over four and a half years, after a median of three lactations. So “how long do goats live” is really two questions: how long the animal can live, and how long people keep it. This guide answers both, and it is specific about which parts of the gap you control. How long do goats live?

Ten to fifteen years is the figure taught in US extension programs, and it is a reasonable expectation for a healthy goat in a small herd or a backyard. Treat it as teaching material rather than as a published cohort study, because that is what it is: the source above is a 4-H study sheet. Nobody has published a survival analysis for pet goats.

The upper bound is better documented. AnAge, the animal ageing database maintained by the Human Ageing Genomic Resources project, records a maximum longevity of 20.8 years for Capra hircus from a large captive sample it grades as high quality, and adds the observation that matters here: goats may be capable of living longer, but they are culled before reaching their maximum lifespan.

A 2020 review in GeroScience named the gap directly. Hoffman and Valencak surveyed what is known about ageing in farm mammals and concluded that for goats, as for cattle and sheep, expected lifespan is much longer than productive age because the animals are removed from the population relatively early. Their goat figures: an average age of about 4 years in one French dairy population, with some animals kept past 8, and mean culling ages of 4.5 years and 4.5 to 5.7 years in two New Zealand studies. That review is also the reason to distrust most of what you will read on this question. Search it and you will find confident tables giving separate lifespans for does, bucks, wethers, pygmies and Boers, quoted to the year, with no primary source anywhere. Hoffman and Valencak’s central argument is that we lack clear knowledge of the age-related diseases and causes of death that affect livestock through natural ageing, and lack detailed age-specific survival rates, precisely because production animals leave the herd before they get old. What follows is limited to what a named source states.

Does, bucks, and wethers

Does

A doe’s number is usually set by the herd she is in rather than by her body. The New Zealand data above is the clearest picture available: mean age at removal about 4.5 years, median 1,500 days, with the middle half of the animals leaving between 1,142 and 2,026 days, so between roughly three and five and a half years old.

The reasons are ordinary rather than dramatic. The French dairy work Hoffman and Valencak summarise attributes most losses to nervous, digestive and reproductive problems and to lameness, and their culling table lists udder disorder, locomotor disorder, digestive disorder, reproductive disorder and emaciation. None of those is old age. Each is a reason a doe stops paying her way while she is still, biologically, a young adult.

Bucks

A working buck is exposed to risks a doe is not, and Merck is blunt about one of them. Because aggression and dominance behaviour increase during breeding season, a new buck should not be introduced to an established pen of bucks at that time, because doing so risks injury and death. Bucks are also on the urinary-stone list below, and a breeding buck who tears a urethra carries a grave prognosis for breeding even if he survives. What no source supports is a fixed number of years for bucks against does. If you meet one, ask where it came from.

Wethers, and the urinary calculi problem

This is the section worth reading twice, because it is where a routine decision made in the first months of life shows up years later.

Obstructive urolithiasis is a substantial cause of morbidity and death in male ruminants, and Merck’s professional chapter, reviewed in November 2025, states that it is most common in wethers, bucks and rams, with commercial, exhibition and pet animals all at risk. The anatomy is the problem: a male small ruminant has a long sigmoid urethra ending in a vermiform appendage, a 2 to 4 cm extension beyond the glans penis, which is the most common site of obstruction.

Two management levers exist, and they are not equally well evidenced.

Diet is the lever with the best support. Merck’s goat nutrition chapter is explicit that although early castration and genetic predisposition are often discussed as causes, diet is the most important management tool for minimising risk, and it asks for bucks, buck kids and wethers to be fed a diet low in magnesium with a calcium-to-phosphorus ratio of about 2:1, with grain minimised to keep phosphorus low and fresh clean water always available so urine stays dilute. The urolithiasis chapter gives the same target with a working range: if grain or pelleted feed is fed at all, hold the total ration at 2 to 2.5:1, since raising the ratio predisposes to calcium carbonate stones and lowering it predisposes to phosphatic ones. Show and feeder animals are at highest risk of phosphatic stones; pets and others eating alfalfa and other legumes are at highest risk of calcium carbonate stones.

Castration timing is the lever people argue about, and the evidence is thinner than the argument. Merck lists delayed castration as one of two ways to make the urinary tract less prone to blocking, and states that delaying castration until at least 8 weeks has been shown to have a positive impact on urethral diameter in calves and lambs. Read that sentence carefully: the demonstrated effect is in calves and lambs, not in goats. Alabama Cooperative Extension describes the practice honestly as a growing trend to delay castration in males fed a high-concentrate diet, such as pets and show animals, rather than as a settled protocol with a proven age.

There is a second point people miss. Merck states that early-castrated males have the highest incidence of urethral obstruction, and then adds, in the same paragraph, that urethral obstruction is also common in intact male goats. Late castration is not immunity. The second surgical option Merck lists, prophylactic removal of the vermiform appendage, is worth raising with your veterinarian for a pet wether, and Merck notes that no primary study has tested whether removal harms fertility, which is why it is a conversation for a wether rather than a breeding buck.

Know the emergency signs, because this kills over days: straining, stretching out, vocalising, grinding teeth, going off feed, and crystals visible as grit on the preputial hairs. A pear-shaped abdomen or a plaque of soft swelling in front of the sheath means something has already ruptured. This is a same-hour call to a veterinarian, not a wait-and-see. Dairy, meat, brush, and pet

Use changes the answer more than breed does.

Dairy does are the group with real published numbers, and those numbers are the lowest, because a commercial dairy replaces animals on production. The New Zealand cohort’s median of three lactations is the shape of it.

Meat goats are mostly slaughtered young by design, so the lifespan question applies only to the breeding stock kept back, who then face the same culling pressures as any breeding animal. The Boer breed profile covers the main US meat breed and the ABGA standard behind it.

Brush and pack goats are usually wethers, which puts them in the urinary-stone section above and makes their feed program the most important thing about them. Usefully, the diet a working brush goat wants anyway, mostly browse and forage with very little grain, is the diet that protects the urinary tract.

Pet goats are the group most likely to approach the biological number, because nobody culls them. Hoffman and Valencak note that many small hobby farms keep goats for companionship and that large-animal veterinarians are already treating ageing livestock, while adding that data from that practice is anecdotal rather than rigorous. Pet goats carry a risk of their own: Merck records that in resource-rich countries overfeeding, not underfeeding, is the common cause of disease, and that improper feeding of starches is frequent on small hobby and pet farms. What pet keeping does not change is parasites, and Merck states plainly that hobby herds with pasture access can have as many parasite-related complications as large production herds.

What actually shortens a goat’s life

Internal parasites, and one worm in particular

Haemonchus contortus, the barber pole worm, is the most common pathogenic gastrointestinal parasite in small ruminants. It is a blood feeder, a female can produce up to 10,000 eggs a day, and in the hyperacute form death can follow within a week of heavy infection without obvious warning signs. Diarrhoea is not a characteristic sign of a pure Haemonchus infection, which is why owners watching for scours miss it; anaemia, weight loss, a poor coat and bottle jaw are the signs to know. Late pregnancy and early lactation are the dangerous window, because a periparturient rise in egg counts is common and mature goats can develop fatal infections then.

The reason this dominates small-ruminant medicine in much of the US is the drug situation. A 2008 cross-sectional study of 46 sheep and goat farms across eight southern states, Puerto Rico and St Croix found Haemonchus contortus resistant to benzimidazole on 45 farms (98%), ivermectin on 35 (76%), levamisole on 25 (54%) and moxidectin on 11 (24%), with resistance to all three older classes on 22 farms (48%) and to all three plus moxidectin on 8 (17%). That 48% is often quoted as resistance to every dewormer on the market, which overstates what the study measured; the paper’s own all-drug figure is 17%. The Merck Veterinary Manual now records that resistance to every drug class has been documented in the US, that rotational deworming is no longer recommended because it perpetuates multidrug resistance, and that treatment should go only to clinically affected animals while preserving refugia.

The practical tool is FAMACHA. The American Consortium for Small Ruminant Parasite Control describes it as a card that matches lower-eyelid colour to anemia levels as an indicator of clinical barber pole worm infection, used to identify which animals need treating and which do not. Producers must be trained to receive a card, and Louisiana State University is the sole distributor in North America. Per Merck, FAMACHA scoring markedly decreases dewormer use, increases production factors and slows resistance. It detects anaemia rather than worms, so use it alongside fecal egg counts and your veterinarian’s judgement, not instead of them.

Teeth, and the broken mouth

A goat’s mouth is both a calendar and a clock. Alabama Extension gives the sequence: eight milk teeth at birth, the central pair replaced by permanent incisors at about 1 year, another pair each year, a full mouth at 4 years, and wear on the permanent teeth as the estimate for animals older than 5. When a doe starts losing incisors she is called a broken mouth.

That is where teeth become a lifespan issue rather than a party trick. A goat that cannot graze efficiently loses condition, and Merck’s pre-breeding checklist puts it directly: feet and teeth should be examined, and animals that have difficulty walking or eating are not ideal candidates for breeding. In a commercial herd the broken mouth is culled. In a pet herd she needs softer feed, closer condition monitoring, and a plan made with your veterinarian.

Kidding

Kidding is the doe’s highest-risk day of the year, and most of the risk is in the weeks before it. Both pregnancy toxemia and hypocalcemia are attributed by Merck to inadequate late-gestation feeding, with does carrying multiple fetuses needing proportionally more energy and both obesity and emaciation to be avoided. The manual is grim about the endpoint of pregnancy toxemia: once the doe is recumbent and off feed, does and kids rarely survive even with the best veterinary care. Hypocalcemia looks similar and responds well to treatment, which is one more reason to get a veterinarian to the animal rather than guessing. For the kidding itself, Merck’s timing marker is useful: after strong abdominal contractions begin, the first kid should be born within an hour. A clean, dry, draft-free kidding area and minimal disturbance are the rest of it, since does can suppress labour when stressed.

Predators and fencing

Merck’s management chapter asks that measures be taken to guard against predators, particularly during kidding season and in large grazing herds, and makes a point urban and suburban keepers underestimate: in urban and semiurban areas, the greatest predator risk often comes from neighbouring dogs. It also asks that fencing be kept in good repair to minimise loss of animals and possible entrapment, and notes that goats are natural jumpers and climbers, so anything they can scale should not sit near a fence line.

Copper, and the rest of the mineral program

Goats have relatively high copper requirements compared with other species, and they can suffer both deficiency and toxicosis. The recommended dietary copper to molybdenum ratio is in the range of 6:1 to 10:1, and the same chapter warns that commercial sheep feeds containing sodium molybdate, which exist to protect sheep from copper toxicity, should not be fed to goats because they can cause copper deficiency. The contrast only makes sense read as a pair: sheep are the species most susceptible to copper toxicosis, which our sheep lifespan guide covers from that side. Subclinical deficiency shows up as impaired reproduction, increased perinatal kid losses and greater disease susceptibility, which is exactly the sort of slow loss that never gets attributed to minerals.

The trap runs the other way too. Copper oxide wire particle boluses are used against Haemonchus because the worm is sensitive to copper ions, and Merck notes that repeated administration for parasite control increases the risk of copper toxicosis, for which treatment is generally ineffective once clinical signs appear. Merck’s goat nutrition chapter says copper boluses should be used only with extreme caution. Build the mineral program with your veterinarian and your extension service against a feed and water analysis, and record what you gave and when. For the rest of the macrominerals, Merck asks that supplements be adjusted toward a 2:1 calcium-to-phosphorus ratio and a 4:1 potassium-to-magnesium ratio, with loose minerals and salt preferred over blocks.

The chronic three

Caprine arthritis encephalitis, paratuberculosis (Johne’s disease) and caseous lymphadenitis all shorten a goat’s useful life quietly. Per Merck, Johne’s cannot be cured, its bacterium survives for years in soil, its clinical signs may not appear until animals are much older, and treatment of caseous lymphadenitis is not considered effective. Buying tested stock and quarantining new arrivals is the whole strategy, which makes the seller’s records part of your goat’s lifespan.

Body condition is the cheapest longevity tool you own

Body condition scoring runs 1 to 5, and Alabama Extension’s warning is the useful part: it cannot be judged by looking, because hair hides poor condition, so the evaluator must feel the muscle and fat over the loin, the sternum and the ribs. Their targets are a score of 2.5 to 3.5 for does at breeding, 3 to 3.5 before kidding, and 3 to 3.5 for bucks before the breeding season. Merck’s breeding chapter gives an average target of 3.5 out of 5, so the two sit inside each other rather than agreeing exactly; take the range and talk to your veterinarian about your own animals.

Scored monthly and written down, condition is an early-warning system for parasites, teeth and Johne’s alike, months before any of them announce themselves.

What an older goat needs

There is no published senior-care protocol for goats, and it would be dishonest to invent one. What the sources above support is a shift in emphasis: check the mouth, because incisor loss changes what the animal can eat; watch condition by feel, because an older goat is expected to be thinner and that expectation hides real illness; keep the parasite plan going, because acquired immunity is not sterilising and an old goat under stress can still be overwhelmed; and keep her company, because Merck’s management chapter is clear that goats are social and that lower-status animals need room to move away from dominant ones. Merck’s early sick-goat signs are worth memorising at any age: an animal that stops eating or drinking, stands apart with its head and tail down, grinds its teeth, or loses weight when it should not.

The records that make all of this work

Almost everything above is a trend, not an event. Parasite treatments only tell you something in sequence, condition only means something as a curve, and a doe’s kidding history is the argument for or against breeding her again.

Six things are worth keeping on a goat’s record: an individual ID that is not a description of her colour, the birthdate, every kidding with its outcome, every parasite treatment with the product and the withdrawal time your veterinarian gave you, the mineral program including any copper bolus, and a body condition score with a date. That withdrawal column matters more in goats than in most species, because goats and sheep are a minor-use species with a narrow list of approved drugs, so much of what is used is extralabel and carries extended withdrawal times.

Weights, body condition scores, kidding outcomes and treatment dates only mean something as a series. Keep them on one animal timeline instead of in six notebooks.

Goat lifespan FAQ

How long do pet goats live?
No study compares them directly, but the mechanism that pulls herd figures down, culling on production, does not apply to a pet, so 10 to 15 years is a fair planning figure. No published survival study covers pet goats, so treat any table giving you a precise pet-goat number by breed with suspicion.

Do wethers live longer than bucks or does?
No source establishes that. What Merck does establish is that obstructive urolithiasis is most common in wethers, bucks and rams, and that early-castrated males have the highest incidence of urethral obstruction, which makes a wether’s feed program the main thing standing between him and a preventable death. Manage the ration and the water and he has a good chance of a long life; feed him grain like a show animal and he does not.

What is the oldest goat on record?
The AnAge database records a verified maximum of 20.8 years in captivity, held by one female. A 22-year animal is reported in the literature it cites, described there as plausible but unverified.

Do small breeds live longer than large ones?
There is no goat longevity study by breed that supports a ranking, so this guide does not give one. Anyone who hands you a per-breed table is passing along a number nobody measured.

How can I tell how old a goat is if the seller does not know?
Look at the incisors. A full mouth of four pairs means at least 4 years, and after that you are estimating from wear, which is approximate. Get the birthdate in writing at purchase whenever it is knowable, and if it is not, ask your veterinarian to estimate an age at the first exam and record that as your baseline.
