Dong Tao
The Dong Tao chicken, often referred to as the "Dragon Chicken," is a unique and rare breed originating from Vietnam, particularly prized for its distinctive appearance and cultural significance. Renowned for its enormous, bulbous legs, which resemble dragon claws, the Dong Tao stands out as an avian oddity. These thick legs, covered in rough, reddish scales, can measure nearly the same thickness as a human wrist, giving the breed its mythical name. The Dong Tao chicken boasts a robust body, typically covered in white or reddish-brown feathers, and a proud, upright stance. The breed is highly valued not only for its meat, considered a delicacy and often reserved for royalty or special occasions in Vietnam, but also for its stature as a status symbol among poultry enthusiasts. Owing to its rarity and challenging breeding process, due to its awkward gait and sensitivity to temperature changes during hatching, the Dong Tao remains a sought-after and prestigious chicken breed.
