How Long Do Chickens Live? Backyard Hen Lifespan vs Production Reality

Most backyard hens live six to eight years, and individual birds reach eleven. Six to eight is the figure the University of Wisconsin Division of Extension gives small flock owners, and the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine puts it at as long as eight years with good care and no major health problems. Nobody has published a survival curve for backyard chickens, so read every number here as a working range, not an actuarial table.

The number that changes how you keep a hen is a different one. She lays best in her first year, drops every year after, and from about age two the illnesses that end backyard hens are mostly diseases of the reproductive tract. A hen is a short career layer inside a medium length pet, two clocks in one bird, and confusing them is why keepers get blindsided at year three. How long do chickens live?

The sources a new keeper reaches for do not perfectly agree. Wisconsin’s extension service states hens may live in backyard flocks for six to eight years and that most flocks produce eggs for three to four. Dr. Yvette Johnson-Walker, a veterinary epidemiologist at the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine, says chickens can live as long as eight years with good care and no major health problems, and that egg production will decrease around three years of age. University of Minnesota Extension is the outlier: hens begin laying at around six months and can continue for five to 10 years, with peak production in the first two. They disagree instructively, because Minnesota describes what a hen is capable of and Wisconsin what a flock actually produces. The University of Florida IFAS publication on backyard egg production splits it in a sentence: chickens can live for many years and lay for many of them, but after two or three years many hens significantly decline in productivity, and it varies greatly from bird to bird.

Two datasets show the far end in practice. Autopsies of 2,687 backyard birds at 12 diagnostic laboratories across eight US states between 2015 and 2017 recorded ages from 4 days to 11 years. A decade of pet chickens at the avian clinic of the University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna hit the same 11 year ceiling, with a median age of 1.5 years. Eleven is not the biological limit, but it is roughly where the veterinary caseload stops.

The laying curve, year by year

Florida’s extension service describes a laying cycle of about 12 months. Production begins at 18 to 22 weeks depending on breed and season, rises sharply to a peak of about 90 percent six to eight weeks later, then declines to about 65 percent after 12 months of lay. Those figures are rate of lay, so a flock at 90 percent produces about nine eggs a day from every ten hens. Then the hen molts, rests, and starts again lower.

Each cycle after that is smaller. Poultry Extension, the national Cooperative Extension poultry resource, states that many home flocks produce eggs on and off for three to four years, each year lower than the previous, with egg size increasing and shell quality decreasing. Wisconsin’s advice is to retire old hens and add pullets every two to three years. The extension article on end of life decisions in small flocks, by poultry specialists at the University of Kentucky and Penn State, sets the bar bluntly: a hen that lays for two to three years can be considered a successful layer.

Production hybrids and heritage breeds

The folk claim is that high production hybrids burn out and die young while heritage breeds live long. The sourced version is narrower and mostly about laying years, not lifespan. Poultry Extension states that commercial type hens may give a higher level of production initially, but other breeds tend to lay for more years. That is the only part of the folk claim with an extension source behind it.

On the heritage side, the strongest reference point is a breed marketing standard rather than a mortality study. The Livestock Conservancy, the US nonprofit that maintains the Heritage Chicken definition, requires a heritage bird to have the genetic ability to live a long, vigorous life in outdoor production, and sets the bar at breeding hens productive for five to seven years and roosters for three to five. That is a target imposed on breeders, not a measured average.

The lever with veterinary sourcing behind it is body condition rather than breed. Florida’s extension service reports that oviduct prolapse happens when a bird is too fat or an egg is too large, and that prolapse usually causes permanent damage and is fatal in many cases. Merck describes a related overfeeding cascade, but states it for broiler breeder hens specifically, so do not read that passage as a backyard layer finding. No published study compares hybrid and heritage backyard hen longevity head to head, so nobody can honestly give you a number for it.

What actually kills backyard chickens

The disease data has two peaks, and they land at opposite ends of a hen’s life.

Marek’s disease, and the young bird peak

In the eight state autopsy survey, neoplasia and lymphoproliferative disease was the most common primary diagnosis, involved in 42.1 percent of the 2,687 birds, and 63.4 percent of those cases were virally induced. Marek’s disease alone was diagnosed in 582 birds, 22 percent of the total, and the authors report it was the most common cause of mortality in every state studied. Among birds under a year old, 37.3 percent died of probable virally induced neoplasia, with the highest number of deaths at three to six months.

Marek’s is a herpesvirus causing T cell lymphomas and enlarged peripheral nerves, and the Merck Veterinary Manual is clear that no treatment is available while current vaccines are highly protective, with efficacy usually above 90 percent. The catch is timing: Merck states vaccines are given at hatch, or in ovo to embryos on the 18th day of incubation. You cannot add this at home to a bird you already own.

That makes vaccination status a purchase decision, and the autopsy authors say why it matters for backyard flocks specifically. The vaccine is only administered at some hatcheries producing birds for backyard flocks; when used it is often given at one or two days old instead of in ovo, which delays immunity; it typically costs the buyer extra; and many backyard hatcheries can only offer the serotype 3 vaccine, which is less protective than commercial hatchery options. Their recommendation is to buy only vaccinated chicks. Ask before you pay and record the answer, because in two years you will not remember. Reproductive tract disease, and the older hen peak

Past about two years, the picture changes. Merck’s entry on reproductive system neoplasia states that the most frequent tumor of the reproductive system is adenocarcinoma of the oviduct, that its incidence increases with age, and that it may be a frequent cause of death after age 2. The autopsy survey names the same picture from the necropsy table: ovarian adenocarcinoma and carcinomatosis, 314 cases, the most common tumor not attributed to a virus. The two sources name the primary site differently, oviduct against ovary, and this guide reports both rather than picking one, because either way the finding is a reproductive tract carcinoma seeded through the coelom.

Then the infectious side. When an ovulated yolk misses the oviduct it drops into the body cavity, which Merck calls internal laying and describes as something that can happen throughout a hen’s life, with some hens becoming chronic internal layers. Free yolk alone is usually survivable, and Merck says explicitly that ovarian regression leaking yolk into the abdomen rarely causes death. The killer is the bacterial complication: yolk is an excellent growth medium, most often for Escherichia coli, and Merck states that egg yolk peritonitis complicated by bacterial infection is a common cause of sporadic death in laying hens, with antimicrobial treatment usually ineffective once the coelom is involved. Salpingitis, inflammation of the oviduct itself, sits in the same family.

The Vienna decade shows how often a keeper meets this. Across 419 pet chickens, egg yolk peritonitis was the second most common disease diagnosed at 9.9 percent, behind upper respiratory infection. Of 63 reproductive tract cases, 48.4 percent were egg yolk peritonitis, salpingitis or an impacted oviduct, and 21 percent were reproductive neoplasia. Two to three year olds were the largest age group at 24.2 percent of those cases, with unknown age next at 21 percent, so read the age pattern as a lean rather than a measurement.

At the coop this is unglamorous. The signs are vague: a hen who stops laying and stays stopped, stands hunched with her tail down, goes off feed, goes quiet, or whose abdomen looks or feels full. Kentucky’s extension write up on egg peritonitis in laying hens notes the condition causes a buildup of fluid in the abdominal area and that a hen may die quickly or sicken gradually, and vague signs of that kind accounted for 57.3 percent of admissions at the Vienna clinic. Read them against the extension list of common signs of illness in poultry, then call a vet who sees poultry, because a hen with a treatable oviduct problem and a hen with an inoperable carcinoma look the same across a run. Predators, and the killer the disease data cannot count

Laboratory data is the best evidence available on what makes backyard chickens sick, and close to useless on predation, because nobody drives a raccoon killed hen to a state lab. In that eight state survey, trauma of all kinds accounted for 96 of 2,687 birds. Nobody should read that as the rate at which predators take backyard chickens.

Poultry Extension’s predator management guide is specific about where enclosures fail. Least weasels can squeeze through holes as small as a quarter inch and typically get through chicken wire, and raccoons pull a bird’s head through the wires of an enclosure and eat only the head. The remedies it names are physical: a run covered with welded wire, hardware cloth buried at least 12 inches to stop diggers, and training birds into a house at night by feeding or watering them indoors at dusk. So chicken wire contains chickens and excludes nothing, half inch hardware cloth is the mesh that matters, and every bird goes behind a closed door at dusk. Molt: the normal pause that looks like illness

Once a year, usually as day length falls, a mature hen drops her feathers, regrows them, and largely stops laying while she does it. This is the most common false alarm in backyard keeping. Mississippi State University Extension describes two patterns: late molters lay for 12 to 14 months before molting and shed fast, finishing in two to three months, while early molters may start after only a few months in production and can take four to six. The counterintuitive part is that late molters, the ones that look most ragged, are generally the better layers. Poultry Extension’s first diagnostic question when hens stop laying is whether they have been laying for 10 months or more, because if so they are probably at the end of a cycle and will molt, rest and start again.

The distinction that matters is a molting hen against a sick one. A molting bird is bright, eating, drinking and active, with pin feathers visibly pushing through, and loses feathers in a set order starting at the head and neck. A hen who is hunched, off feed, standing apart, or losing feathers only around the vent with irritated skin underneath is a different problem, and mites, lice and reproductive disease all belong on that list. Roosters, and what nobody has measured

Neither large backyard flock dataset here compares how long roosters live against hens, and no source cited on this page reports a head to head figure. Both caseloads are dominated by females: males were 14.8 percent of the US autopsy submissions, and 83.8 percent of the Vienna cases were female, which mostly reflects that backyard flocks are mostly hens. What can be said honestly is structural. The whole reproductive tract category above does not apply to a male bird, and it is the cluster that dominates the older end of a hen’s life. Against that, roosters carry their own risks, from fighting injuries to the plain fact that ordinances, neighbors and flock politics mean far fewer reach old age at all. The Livestock Conservancy’s heritage standard sets rooster breeding usefulness at three to five years against five to seven for hens, but that is a fertility target for breeders, not a measured lifespan.

Commercial chickens answer a different question

Search results mix backyard hens with production birds, and the numbers look alarming until you notice they answer a different question. The USDA Economic Research Service states that market broiler chickens are generally slaughtered before they reach two months of age, and that table egg type chickens begin laying at about four to four and a half months and run a cycle that can last 14 to 15 months, with further cycles optional after a molt. Wisconsin’s extension service puts the working figure for commercial layers at two to three years before production falls off.

Those are production decisions, not biological limits. The records that make an old hen easier to keep

All of this is a timeline problem, and none of it works if the flock is a blur of similar brown birds. Four things per bird are worth writing down. The hatch date, because it sets every expectation on this page. The Marek’s vaccination status at purchase, because you cannot fix it later and you will be asked. The laying history, because a hen who stopped in October and restarted in January molted, and a hen who stopped in March and never restarted did not. And weight or body condition at intervals, because a slow decline over three months is a signal one handling cannot give you.

What is the oldest chicken ever recorded?
Guinness World Records lists the oldest chicken ever as Muffy, a Red Quill Muffed American Game in the United States, who died aged 23 years and 152 days. The oldest living chicken title is held by a hen named Gertie, verified at 15 years and 100 days in Portland, Maine on 7 November 2025. Treat both as records rather than targets.

How long do chickens lay eggs?
Two to four years of useful laying. Poultry Extension says many home flocks produce eggs on and off for three to four years with each year lower than the last, and its end of life guidance calls a hen who lays for two to three years a successful layer. University of Minnesota Extension takes the widest view at five to 10 years, with peak production in the first two.

Do chickens stop laying and then live for years?
Often, and that is the part people are unprepared for. A hen who lays well for three years and lives for seven spends her second half as a pet. Decide in advance whether you are keeping non laying hens, because the alternative is a harder decision to make in a hurry.

Why did my three year old hen suddenly die with no warning?
Reproductive tract disease is the first thing a poultry vet will think of at that age. Merck reports that oviduct adenocarcinoma may be a frequent cause of death after age 2, and that bacterial egg yolk peritonitis is a common cause of sporadic death in laying hens. Both can sit quietly and then present as a hen who was fine last week. A necropsy through your state diagnostic laboratory is the only way to know, and it is worth doing if you have other birds.

Do hens live longer if you stop them laying through winter?
No source cited here answers that, so anyone offering a number is guessing. What is documented is the light mechanism: Poultry Extension says a flock needs at least 14 hours of light a day to stay in lay year round, and that many flocks given no supplemental light go out of production through fall and winter. Extension sources present supplemental lighting as a production choice, not a longevity one in either direction.
