The Ball Python, scientifically known as Python regius, is a non-venomous constrictor native to the grasslands and open forests of West and Central Africa. Known for its gentle temperament, the Ball Python is a popular choice among reptile enthusiasts and is often referred to as the Royal Python due to its regal appearance. This snake typically grows to be around 3 to 5 feet in length, exhibiting a stocky build with a small, rounded head. Its most common coloration features a dark, chocolate-brown or black base with gold or light-brown patches, though selective breeding has produced a wide array of captivating color morphs. Ball Pythons are so named for their instinct to curl up into a tight ball when threatened, with their heads hidden securely at the center. Primarily crepuscular, they prefer to hunt small mammals and birds under the cover of twilight or after dark. In captivity, they thrive with proper care, requiring a warm environment, secure habitat, and a diet of appropriately-sized rodents. Known for their longevity, Ball Pythons can live for 20 to 30 years or more with proper care, making them a long-term commitment for dedicated reptile keepers.
