Flemish Giant
The Flemish Giant is a historic giant rabbit breed from the Belgian and Flemish farm-rabbit tradition, later developed for exhibition as well as meat. It is recognized by great size, length, heavy bone, and a calm, substantial presence rather than by a compact cobby shape. Color names and exact weight expectations vary by registry, but the essential type is a long, powerful rabbit with enough balance to move well despite its scale.
Keeping Flemish Giants requires housing built for a giant breed: large floor area, good traction, sturdy resting surfaces, and protection from heat. Youngsters grow for longer than small breeds, so feeding should support steady development without pushing fat over soundness. Breeders watch shoulders, hindquarter width, feet, and temperament, since size alone is not quality. For buyers, the main differences are often between commercial utility lines, show lines, and companion-bred rabbits. A giant rabbit can be gentle, but it still needs space, careful lifting, and routine checks for sore hocks.
