The Argente Brun is a silvered chocolate rabbit with a substantial commercial body type and upright ears. The brown undercolor matters: a silver looking rabbit is not automatically an Argente Brun. What makes the coat distinctive?
The American Rabbit Breeders Association describes a dense coat with a deep chocolate undercolor. The American Argente Brun Rabbit Club calls the breed a silvered chocolate, medium sized commercial rabbit. Source effective dates: undated breed descriptions; checked October 16, 2026.
The linked Dominion standard calls for even silvering or frosting over chocolate, with darker chocolate guard hairs and a rich chocolate undercolor. It allows some age related fading. That is why an evenly gray photograph does not tell the whole story. Ask the breeder to show the coat in natural light and explain the standard they use.
A pedigree should identify the animal you are buying. Ask how the breeder distinguishes pet, breeding and show prospects, and which faults or disqualifications they have already observed. A promising youngster is still a prospect; a photograph cannot guarantee what a judge will decide later.
A modern North American population with an older name
The club’s history distinguishes the older European breed story from the modern Canadian development. It records ARBA recognition as effective February 1, 2016. This guide labels the Canadian numbers rather than silently applying them to every country. If you plan to show in the United States, obtain the current ARBA Standard of Perfection and discuss the relevant age and sex class with an experienced breeder or judge. Do not substitute a UK Argente weight just because the name looks similar.

Plan the home before choosing the coat
A show weight limit is not a complete housing plan. Make sure the adult rabbit can move normally and has a secure resting place, not just a carrier that fits the journey home.
Merck Veterinary Manual’s rabbit housing guidance recommends a safe, ventilated home, exercise, hiding places, chewing enrichment and fresh water. Open pens need nonslip flooring. Ask a rabbit experienced veterinarian to help with a diet and health plan appropriate to the animal’s stage and condition.
Ask the seller for the current feed, routine and health history before collection. Keep the transition information with the rabbit’s identity. If breeding is your goal, request the parents’ identities and the records behind any fertility or growth claim rather than repeating an expected litter size or processing age as a breed guarantee.
Cost and availability

Is an Argente Brun the same as a Champagne d’Argent?
They are separate breeds in ARBA’s recognized breed list. The chocolate base is central to the Brun description; the word silver alone does not establish breed identity.
How much should an adult weigh?
The Canadian standard figures above are show ideals and a maximum for the stated senior class. They are not a substitute for assessment of a particular rabbit’s condition by your veterinarian, and other jurisdictions need their own current standard.
Does a gentle breed description guarantee a child’s pet?
No. Meet the individual rabbit and discuss its handling history. Plan adult supervision and safe handling instruction rather than relying on a temperament label.
