Hereford Hog
The Hereford hog is an American domestic pig breed named for its color resemblance to Hereford cattle. It is usually red with a white face, white underline, and white feet, creating a clear contrast from black belted or solid-colored pig breeds. Developed from selected American swine lines in the early twentieth century, the Hereford hog is generally treated as a medium-sized meat breed with a strong visual identity and a place in small-farm, show, and heritage herds.
Hereford hogs need the same practical management as other full-sized pigs: secure fencing, shade, water, shelter, balanced feed, and handling that respects their strength. Their markings make them easy to recognize, but breeding decisions should still emphasize sound legs, growth, mothering ability, and temperament. People buying Hereford breeding stock should ask about registration status and herd health. On small farms, the breed's moderate frame and red-and-white pattern can be useful, but the animals still require real livestock infrastructure.
