Large Black
The Large Black is an old British pig breed, traditionally associated with Devon, Cornwall, and East Anglia, and recognized for its solid black coat and large lop ears that partly cover the face. It was developed as a full-sized farm pig for outdoor and mixed systems, with a deep body, calm nature, and useful foraging ability. The dark skin helps reduce sunburn risk compared with white breeds, while the heavy ears give the breed its unmistakable profile.
Large Black pigs are often kept by heritage breeders, pasture pork farms, and conservation-minded smallholders. Their size means they still require strong fencing, loading facilities, and well-drained shelter, even when they are docile. Breeding programs should balance traditional type with practical traits such as litter performance, feet, and growth, because rare-breed enthusiasm alone will not maintain a useful farm animal over time.
