Mangalitsa
Mangalitsa is a common English spelling for the Hungarian Mangalica, a curly-coated lard pig bred for rich pork, fat production, and outdoor hardiness. The breed is usually seen in blonde, red, or swallow-bellied forms, with a dense seasonal coat that gives it a sheep-like outline. It is not a miniature or quick-finishing pig; its appeal comes from traditional genetics, slower growth, and meat qualities suited to specialty production.
Mangalitsa herds need management that respects both their foraging ability and their full adult size. Good fencing, shade, clean water, mineral balance, and winter bedding are basic requirements, and finishing programs often take longer than commercial pork schedules. Buyers should ask whether the animals are registered or traceable, which variety they represent, and how the breeder selects for feet, fertility, and temperament. The spelling may vary, but the husbandry questions stay the same.
