Hogs & Horns Homestead raises purebred large black pigs on the Alberta prairies near Lavoy, situated in central Alberta roughly an hour east of Edmonton. The family-run operation is women-powered, led by Monica Baker and Jen Baker, and grew out of a commitment to knowing where food comes from alongside a broader effort to conserve critically endangered heritage breeds in Canada.

The homestead's large black program centers on purebred, registered stock with traceable bloodlines documented through the Canadian Livestock Records Corporation (CLRC). Breeding animals are selected for conformation and temperament, and the herd is structured across multiple groups to allow a range of unrelated pairings — an important consideration for a breed with limited genetics nationally. The farm has even participated in importation of large black genetics from Britain to strengthen and diversify available bloodlines.

All pigs are raised hormone-free and steroid-free on outdoor pasture, with access to Alberta's natural prairie grasses, forage, and a soy-free, corn-free feed made from locally grown grains. Antibiotics are used only when medically necessary.
