Chincoteague Pony
The Chincoteague pony is a hardy, small horse breed best known for living on Assateague Island and Chincoteague Island off the coast of Virginia and Maryland. Famous for its annual pony swim and forits association with the local wild herds, this breed has become a symbol of resilience and coastal adaptation. Chincoteague ponies are typically compact, sturdy, and sure-footed, traits that help them thrive in sandy, windy, and sometimes harsh island conditions.
Although often called ponies because of their size, they have the build of a tough, practical working animal with a deep chest, strong legs, and a thick mane and tail. Their coats can appear in many colors, and their small stature does not diminish their strength or endurance. Chincoteague ponies are generally intelligent, alert, and easy to handle when properly trained, making them popular for riding, driving, and children’s equestrian activities. Their unique history and island heritage give them a special place among American pony breeds.
