Minorca
The Minorca is a distinguished chicken breed known for its striking appearance and excellent egg-laying abilities. Originating from the Spanish island of Menorca, this breed is the largest of the Mediterranean class, renowned for its glossy black plumage that shimmers with a greenish hue under sunlight. The breed possesses a graceful elegance, with a long and muscular build, large red wattles, and a prominent single comb that is characteristically upright in roosters and daintily lopsided in hens. Minorcas are celebrated for their prolific egg production, laying large, white eggs consistently throughout the year. Their alert and active nature reflects their free-ranging origins, making them excellent foragers. However, they are more suited to warmer climates, as their large combs can be susceptible to frostbite in colder conditions. Despite their regal demeanor, Minorcas are known to be somewhat flighty and prefer their space, making them less inclined to regular handling but still an attractive addition to any flock seeking beauty and productivity.
