Dominique

Dominique is a historic American chicken breed, often described as one of the oldest distinct breeds developed in the United States. It is a barred bird with a rose comb, medium body size, yellow skin, and a practical dual-purpose background. The rose comb helps distinguish it from the single-combed Barred Plymouth Rock, even though the two can look similar to casual observers.

Dominiques are useful for small farms that want heritage eggs, moderate meat, steady foraging, and a hardy temperament. They need normal large-fowl care, including predator-safe range, good winter ventilation, and balanced feed. Breeders should preserve the rose comb, correct cuckoo barring, body shape, and laying ability together. Because the breed has passed through periods of scarcity, careful flock records and avoidance of careless crosses help keep the Dominique recognizable and useful.

Colors: Barred, Barred Gray and Black, Birchen, Black, Blue, Brown, Buff, Columbian, Crele, Cuckoo, Duckwing, Gold, Gold Laced, Laced, Lavender, Mille Fleur, Mottled, Partridge, Penciled, Porcelain, Red, Silver, Silver Laced, Spangled, Splash, Wheaten, White
