Black Copper Marans
Black copper Marans are the best-known color variety of the Marans chicken, a French breed from the coastal marsh country around Marans and La Rochelle. The variety has a black body with copper hackles; roosters carry stronger copper on the neck, shoulders, and saddle while the breast stays mostly black. In many standards the birds have lightly feathered shanks, a single comb, and a sturdy dual-purpose build. Their main search association is the very dark brown egg, although shell color varies by line, season, and laying cycle.
Good flocks are selected for more than egg darkness: type, vigor, leg feathering, temper, and consistent copper pattern all matter. Buyers sometimes chase the darkest possible eggs and overlook birds that are too small, over-melanized, or weak in structure. Black copper Marans do well in backyard and small-farm coops with dry litter, adequate space, and careful parasite control around feathered legs. They are moderate layers compared with commercial hybrids, but their egg color and table quality make them common in breeding pens built around heritage-style poultry.
