Gelbvieh

Gelbvieh is a German cattle breed whose name means yellow cattle, reflecting the traditional golden-red or yellow coat of the original Bavarian and Franconian stock. It began as a dual-purpose and draft breed, then developed into a strong beef and maternal breed valued for growth, milk in the cow herd, fertility, and muscling. Modern Gelbvieh populations vary by country; black, red, horned, and polled animals may all be seen, especially where the breed has been graded up or selected for commercial beef markets.

On farms, Gelbvieh are most often used in suckler herds and crossbreeding programs that need heavier calves without sacrificing maternal performance. Cows require the same fundamentals as other medium to large beef cattle: adequate forage, balanced minerals, safe calving facilities, and attention to body condition before breeding. Because selection goals differ between German dual-purpose lines and North American beef lines, buyers usually compare expected progeny data, mature size, calving ease, and polled status rather than relying on color or the breed name alone.
