Norwegian Landrace
The Norwegian Landrace is a white, long-bodied pig breed developed in Norway from landrace-type stock selected for commercial pork production. It belongs to the northern European bacon-pig tradition, with emphasis on length, maternal ability, litter performance, and efficient growth. The breed is not a loose farmyard landrace in the casual sense; it is a managed national population shaped by performance recording and structured breeding.
Producers use Norwegian Landrace genetics mainly in maternal lines, where fertility, teat quality, piglet survival, and carcass leanness all matter. These pigs need normal modern swine management: clean farrowing areas, balanced rations, ventilation, and careful handling to prevent stress. Small farms interested in the breed should know whether they are buying pure breeding stock, commercial crossbreds, or semen from a breeding program, because the name can appear in several production contexts.
