American Guinea
The American Guinea hog is a small heritage breed of domestic pig from the southeastern United States, where compact lard hogs were kept on diversified farms and woodland lots. Often called the American Guinea or Guinea hog, it is typically black, hairy, short-legged, and deep-bodied, with a calmer farmyard temperament than many high-production breeds. It matured as a practical homestead pig rather than an industrial line: thrifty on forage, able to use mast and garden surplus, and valued for richly flavored pork with ample fat.
Today the breed is kept mainly by small farms, conservation breeders, and families wanting a manageable pig rather than a fast-growing market hog. It still needs strong fencing, shade, wallow access, parasite control, and measured feed, since easy-keeping Guinea hogs can become overfat when treated like confinement pigs. Responsible breeding pays close attention to sound feet, litter performance, and unrelated stock because the modern population is limited. Buyers should expect a real adult hog, not a pocket pet, and should check local livestock rules before bringing pigs onto a residential property.
