Quarter Horse

The American Quarter Horse is a United States breed named for its early reputation as a fast sprinter over a quarter mile. It developed from colonial Spanish, English, and local stock, later shaped by Thoroughbred influence and the needs of ranching in the American West. Most Quarter Horses are compact and muscular, with powerful hindquarters, a broad chest, a short strong back, and a generally trainable disposition. The modern breed includes distinct racing, ranch, cutting, reining, western pleasure, halter, hunter, and all-around lines.

Quarter Horses are common in ranch work, rodeo, youth programs, trail riding, racing, and amateur competition, but type varies enough that buyers should shop by discipline and individual soundness. Some lines are easy keepers that need weight control, while high-performance horses require conditioning and careful joint and hoof management. Responsible breeding and purchase decisions include checking registration, performance history, and genetic tests relevant to the breed, such as HYPP, HERDA, GBED, PSSM1, and malignant hyperthermia.
