Russian White
The Russian White is a domestic dairy goat developed in Russia and neighboring areas of the former Soviet Union, largely from local goats improved with Saanen-type dairy stock. It is usually described as a medium-sized, predominantly white goat with a fine coat, upright ears, and a practical dairy build rather than a heavily muscled frame. The breed was selected for milk production under temperate to cold conditions, while retaining the toughness needed for village farms and mixed smallholdings.
Russian White goats are kept mainly for household and small commercial milk, with kids sometimes raised for meat. They are valued where winter housing, conserved hay, and seasonal grazing are part of normal goat management. Good shelter from wet drafts, sound hoof care, and careful feeding through late pregnancy and lactation matter more than intensive show grooming. Because the name is sometimes applied broadly to white dairy goats in the region, buyers should ask about herd origin, milk records, and whether the animals are true Russian White breeding stock or general Saanen-influenced dairy goats.
