Giant Chinchilla
The Giant Chinchilla is a large rabbit developed from chinchilla-colored stock and giant commercial rabbits to combine meat type with the attractive banded chinchilla coat. It is related in purpose to the American Giant Chinchilla tradition, but the plain name can be used more broadly where registry wording differs. The coat should show the layered agouti effect that creates a silvered chinchilla appearance, while the body remains broad and useful.
Management is closer to a large commercial rabbit than to a delicate fancy breed. Giant Chinchillas need room, strong hutches or pens, good footing, and heat protection, especially as mature adults. Breeders select for growth, loin, hindquarter depth, and correct chinchilla color, since weak body type under a pretty coat misses the breed's purpose. They can suit homestead meat programs and exhibition herds, but buyers should ask which standard is being followed and whether the line has been selected mainly for show finish or practical production.
