Belgian Hare (US)
Belgian Hare in the US refers to the American registry version of the athletic, full-arch domestic rabbit that imitates a wild hare in shape and color. The United States standard emphasizes the racy body, long limbs, fine head, ticking, and deep rufous surface that separate the breed from common chestnut rabbits. It remains a specialty show breed rather than an easy shorthand for any hare-colored animal.
US keepers should plan housing that lets the rabbit stand, stretch, and move with secure footing, since the breed's value is tied to condition and carriage. Breeders work slowly, balancing arch and refinement against sound bone, fertility, and temperament. When buying, ask whether the rabbit is from American show lines, imported stock, or a crossbred lookalike, because the same name may be used casually outside organized breeding.
