Dominant white is a family of more than 30 different variants of the KIT gene, numbered W1 and up, that range from extra white markings to an all-white horse, usually with dark eyes. Each variant has its own effect and many occur only in one family. Two copies of several variants are thought to be lethal before birth, while W20, the common one, is viable with two copies.
One copy is enough to show Dominant White; one and two copies look the same.
Single dominant white tests cover W5, W10, W13, W20 and W22; W31, W32, W34 and W35 are on a white pattern registration panel, and W4 has its own test. Several variants can sit together on one chromosome, so a horse can carry more than two.
