Sable
The Sable is the colored dairy goat that comes from Saanen bloodlines. It carries the same general Saanen type: a large, rangy body, upright ears, dairy character, and selection for generous milk production. Instead of the white or cream coat required for Saanens in many registries, Sables may appear in black, brown, tan, chamoisee, buckskin, and other patterns, often with distinct facial or leg markings. The name refers to color and registry status, not to a separate meat or fiber purpose.
Care for Sables is much like care for Saanens, with attention to udder health, mineral balance, and enough feed to support lactation without making does overfat. Their darker pigmentation can be useful in sunny climates, but they still need shade, dry bedding, and protection from weather extremes. People buying breeding animals should confirm how the local registry defines Sable goats, because rules for colored Saanen ancestry can vary. For a milk herd, evaluate teat placement, feet, temperament, and actual production rather than choosing on coat color alone.
