Russell Terrier
The Russell Terrier, commonly referred to as the Jack Russell Terrier, is a lively, intelligent, and spirited small breed known for its fearless nature and energetic disposition. Originally bred in England by Reverend John Russell in the 19th century for fox hunting, this breed has a compact, sturdy, and balanced build, with a slightly larger head proportionate to its body. Standing about 10 to 12 inches tall at the shoulder and weighing between 9 to 15 pounds, the Russell Terrier sports a short, dense coat that comes in predominantly white with black, tan, or tri-color markings.
The breed is renowned for its high energy levels and keen intelligence, which makes them exceptional companions for active families and individuals capable of meeting their exercise needs. They are highly trainable with a strong desire to please, but their independent nature requires consistent, positive reinforcement-based training from an early age. Socialization is equally important to help them manage their instinctual drive to chase.
Russell Terriers are affectionate with family members and often have a strong bond with their owners. However, their strong prey drive can make them less suitable for homes with smaller pets. This breed thrives in environments where they have plenty of opportunities for physical and mental stimulation, flourishing in settings that provide room for play and exploration.
