Top Livestock Shows in the US and Around the World (2026)

Author: Elliott Garber, DVM

Why Livestock Shows Still Matter

In an era of online marketplaces and virtual auctions, livestock shows remain irreplaceable. They’re where breeders evaluate genetics in person, buyers find breeding stock they can see and handle before purchasing, youth exhibitors learn animal husbandry and showmanship, and the broader agricultural community connects face to face.

Whether you’re a first-time spectator, a competitive exhibitor, or a breeder looking to source genetics, knowing which shows to attend and what to expect can make your experience significantly more productive. This guide covers the major shows across the US and internationally, organized by what makes each one worth your time.

The National Western Stock Show (Denver, Colorado)

Dates: Mid-January (typically runs 16 days). The 2026 show runs January 10-25.

The National Western Stock Show is one of the premier livestock events in North America, drawing over 700,000 attendees annually. Founded in 1906, it fills the National Western Complex and the adjacent Denver Coliseum with cattle, sheep, goats, horses, and more.

For cattle breeders, Denver is especially significant. The AHCA (American Highland Cattle Association) holds its National Highland Cattle Show here, making it the most important annual event for highland cattle breeders and buyers. The 37th National Highland Sale in January 2025 topped $1 million in total sales.

Beyond highland cattle, Denver hosts breed shows and sales across major beef and dairy breeds, a premier livestock judging contest, trade show exhibits, and one of the country’s largest stock horse shows. If you attend one livestock show a year, this is a strong choice.

Best for: Buying breeding stock, breed competition, networking, highland cattle enthusiasts

Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo (Houston, Texas)

Dates: Late February through late March (roughly four weeks). 2026 dates: February 24 – March 22.

Houston is the world’s largest livestock show by almost every measure: over 2.5 million attendees, 30,000+ livestock entries, and $400+ million in economic impact. The junior auction alone regularly sets records, with individual animals selling for hundreds of thousands of dollars in scholarship money.

The show covers every major livestock species and features open and junior divisions for cattle, sheep, goats, swine, poultry, and rabbits. The rodeo component draws top entertainment acts, making Houston uniquely accessible to non-agricultural audiences.

For serious livestock people, Houston’s junior market and breeding shows are among the most competitive in the country. Youth exhibitors from across Texas and beyond spend months preparing animals for this show.

Best for: Youth exhibitors, families, spectators new to livestock, massive trade show, entertainment

Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo (Fort Worth, Texas)

Dates: Mid-January through early February. 2026 dates: January 16 – February 7.

Fort Worth is widely considered one of the toughest cattle shows in the country. Classes routinely run 70-80 head deep for steers, meaning competition is fierce and winning here carries real prestige. The show has been running since 1896 and draws over one million attendees.

The Fort Worth Stock Show features open and junior cattle, sheep, goat, and swine shows, plus a significant horse show. The Livestock Exchange Building and surrounding facilities create a uniquely historic atmosphere. For competitive exhibitors, a Fort Worth champion banner is among the most coveted.

Best for: Competitive cattle exhibitors, buying quality market animals, Texas livestock industry networking

North American International Livestock Exposition (Louisville, Kentucky)

Dates: Mid-November (approximately 10 days). Held at the Kentucky Exposition Center.

NAILE is the largest purebred livestock exposition in the world and consistently ranks as one of the most competitive shows for breeding cattle. According to experienced exhibitors and forum discussions, NAILE is considered the toughest show for purebred cattle in North America.

NAILE covers all major beef and dairy cattle breeds, sheep (including a major North American Jackpot), goats, swine, draft horses, and llamas/alpacas. For breeders looking to evaluate and purchase top-tier registered breeding stock, NAILE is hard to beat. The breed association sales held during NAILE week offer some of the best genetics available anywhere.

Best for: Purebred breeding stock, serious breeders and exhibitors, breed association sales

San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo (San Antonio, Texas)

Dates: Early to mid-February (approximately 18 days). Held at the Freeman Coliseum and surrounding grounds.

San Antonio rounds out Texas’s “big three” livestock shows (along with Fort Worth and Houston). It draws over 1.7 million visitors and features livestock competition across all major species. The junior market livestock sales are a highlight, with strong scholarship auction prices.

San Antonio has a particular strength in breeding cattle and hosts significant breed sales. The atmosphere balances serious competition with family-friendly entertainment, including a carnival, nightly rodeo performances, and food vendors.

Best for: Junior livestock exhibitors, breeding cattle sales, families

World Dairy Expo (Madison, Wisconsin)

Dates: Early October (five days). Held at the Alliant Energy Center.

If you’re in dairy, World Dairy Expo is THE show. It’s the world’s largest dairy-focused livestock event, drawing over 60,000 attendees from 100+ countries. The show features breed shows for all major dairy breeds (Holstein, Jersey, Brown Swiss, Guernsey, Ayrshire, Milking Shorthorn, Red & White Holstein), a massive trade show with 800+ exhibitors of dairy equipment and technology, and educational seminars.

The dairy cattle competition at WDE sets the standard globally. A Grand Champion title here is the highest honor in the dairy cattle show ring.

Best for: Dairy producers and breeders, dairy technology and equipment, international dairy industry networking

Oklahoma Youth Expo (Oklahoma City, Oklahoma)

Dates: Mid-March (approximately one week). Held at State Fair Park.

OYE is the world’s largest youth livestock show, with over 10,000 entries. It’s exclusively for exhibitors age 21 and under, making it a unique showcase for the next generation of livestock producers. Species include cattle, swine, sheep, goats, and poultry.

The quality of livestock at OYE is remarkable. Many champion animals from OYE go on to compete successfully at national shows. For families evaluating whether livestock showing is right for their kids, attending OYE as a spectator is an excellent introduction.

Best for: Youth exhibitors and their families, scouting youth show animal genetics

Tips for First-Time Livestock Show Attendees

What to Wear

Comfortable, closed-toe shoes you don’t mind getting dirty. Livestock shows involve barns, arena seating, and a lot of walking on dirt or concrete. Dress in layers for indoor/outdoor temperature changes. Western wear is common but not required.

What to Bring

Cash for food vendors (not all accept cards), a notebook or phone for recording breeder contact information, and a hat or sunscreen if the show has outdoor components. Download the show’s app or program to plan your day around the breeds and events you want to see.

How to Learn

Arrive early to watch setup and preparation. Talk to breeders before or after (not during) their classes. Ask questions about breeds, bloodlines, and management. Most livestock people are generous with their time and knowledge when approached respectfully. Watch how judges evaluate animals and listen to oral reasons if they’re given.

How to Watch Live Remotely

Many major shows now livestream through services like Walton Webcasting, which provides free coverage of major breed shows, state fairs, and national events. RFD-TV also covers major shows. Check individual show websites for streaming schedules.
