A leopard gecko comes out at dusk, lives on the ground rather than in branches, closes its eyes with real eyelids, and takes most of its body heat from whatever it is lying on. Nearly every care decision follows from those four facts, and most advice online ignores at least one.
Three pillars of the care sheet the internet has recycled for twenty years have moved: the enclosure floor veterinary sources ask for is much larger than the starter kit tank, humidity is something Merck’s professional edition says was historically underappreciated in exactly this species, and low level UVB has gone from unnecessary to genuinely debated. Every number below carries its source, starting from the Creatures leopard gecko species page.
A gecko this size hides trouble in numbers rather than in behaviour, and the two that catch it early are a weekly weight in grams and the date of every shed. A free Creatures animal profile holds both, plus feedings and bulb dates, which are the first three things a reptile vet will ask you for.

The biology that shapes the care
Most geckos wear a fixed transparent scale over the eye. Leopard geckos belong to Eublepharidae, the eyelid geckos, and blink instead, so a leopard gecko can retain shed skin on an eyelid, and can show the swollen eyelids Merck’s professional edition lists under vitamin A deficiency. The Reptile Database places the wild animal in eastern Afghanistan, Pakistan and northwestern India, with records into Nepal and eastern Iran, in desert and xeric shrubland.
Then the thermal story, which most care sheets get backwards. A 2023 paper in Biology Open describes it as crepuscular and reports that body temperature reflected substrate temperature, noting that crepuscular and nocturnal ectotherms generally absorb heat from the substrate. Sources split on the label itself, LafeberVet saying nocturnal and JZAR crepuscular or shade dwelling, but none disputes the mechanism, and the mechanism is what you build the enclosure around.
Enclosure: the number has moved, and by a lot
Merck’s professional edition publishes no tank size. It publishes a formula, in its table of recommended minimum space requirements for reptiles: terrestrial lizards get 0.2 square metres per 0.1 metre of total length. LafeberVet puts an adult at 16.5 to 20 cm. Twenty centimetres through that formula is 0.4 square metres, about 4.3 square feet, near enough a 36 by 18 inch footprint. The arithmetic is mine; both inputs are named veterinary sources.
A 20 gallon long tank offers about 2.5 square feet. LafeberVet’s sheet, last reviewed in 2016, calls a 10 to 15 gallon aquarium the minimum for a single male, under 2 square feet. That page is veterinary education, not pet shop packaging, so this is a floor that has risen rather than experts against retailers, and the older published minimum is roughly half of what Merck’s current formula produces. Merck’s pet owner edition adds that terrestrial species usually require more horizontal space, which is why floor area is the dimension worth paying for.
That is a floor, not a whole enclosure. Merck publishes an area for terrestrial lizards and a volume for arboreal ones, so its formula scales the floor and never addresses the ceiling, which is not the same as saying height is irrelevant. The RSPCA’s leopard gecko guidance does put a number on height: a minimum of 60 cm long, 40 cm high and 30 cm deep for one adult, and as large as possible after that. Height is doing work there. The RSPCA fits the UVB tube into the roof at the hot end, notes output falls with distance and is partly blocked by mesh, and asks for low, sturdy branches or rocks to climb on; Merck wants heat sources protected from direct contact and more than 18 inches (45 cm) from the ground covering, which is more clearance than the RSPCA’s 40 cm minimum leaves if the lamp goes inside. Buy the larger floor, and keep enough headroom above it for the lamps and for a gecko to get off the ground.
Two structural points from the same chapter. Merck is lukewarm on glass aquaria: the visibility owners like may stress the animal, glass insulates poorly, and even a full mesh lid can leave ventilation severely hampered, so wood, plastic and fibreglass are called more versatile and preferable. And keep one gecko unless you know exactly what you are doing. Merck says ideally only a single species should be kept in any enclosure and that the solitary reptile pet is often the healthiest; LafeberVet is more permissive, saying males will fight each other but can coexist well with one or more females.
Heat: what the sources actually say about belly heat and overhead heat
The target is not the disputed part. The JZAR UV-Tool, a peer reviewed lighting and microhabitat guide in the Journal of Zoo and Aquarium Research, gives Eublepharis macularius a basking zone substrate surface temperature of 32 C, summer day air of 25 to 29 C and summer night air of 20 to 24 C. LafeberVet reaches the same warm spot independently: a gradient of 70 to 80 F (21 to 27 C) with a warm area reaching 90 F (32 C), dropping into the 70s at night. Merck’s professional table gives a preferred optimal temperature zone of 25 to 30 C (77 to 86 F) as an air gradient, footnoted that basking runs about 5 C warmer and night falls by about 5 C. Three sources, one warm surface of roughly 32 C, spreading only at the cool end where LafeberVet allows 21 C against Merck’s floor of 25 C. Note what the JZAR number is measured on: a substrate surface, not the air. Whatever you buy, the thing being regulated is the floor of the warm end.
The appliance is where people argue. Merck’s pet owner edition says most reptiles prefer overhead bulbs for basking heat and light, and that basking lights are preferred for turtles, tortoises and lizards. The same page keeps under tank heaters as useful heat sources for lizards and snakes, notes that paired with a basking light they can supply heat at night as well as by day, and sets two conditions: no more than 30 percent of the available cage space, so the animal can move off the heat, and designed specifically for reptile tanks. The professional chapter lists heating pads and mats among acceptable heat sources without ranking them against bulbs, and adds the line that settles the night question, that light bulbs cannot be used to provide nocturnal heat.
Which wins, I will not tell you: no source I found ranks under tank against overhead heat for this species, and none runs a controlled comparison. The claim that mats specifically cause burns did not survive checking either. The one peer reviewed thermal burn case series in geckos I could find, in the New Zealand Veterinary Journal in 2020, describes eight geckos in a zoological collection burned after a ceramic heat bulb was added 10 cm above the cage mesh, three of which died or were euthanised once the burns turned fungal. That was an overhead source, and those species carry a fused spectacle where a leopard gecko has eyelids, so the lesion does not transfer. The distance does: Merck asks that heat sources be protected from direct contact and placed more than 18 inches (45 cm) from the ground covering.
What every source agrees on is the part people skip.
- A thermostat on every heat source. Merck’s owner page says heat sources should be attached to programmable thermostats; the professional chapter says heaters should be thermostat controlled, screened from the animals, and positioned toward one end to create a gradient.
- Two thermometers, one in the cool end and one in the warm end, Merck’s stated minimum, read just above the substrate where the animal sits rather than in the air.
- No hot rocks. Merck’s professional edition says they frequently result in burns in larger animals and should be avoided.
- Burns are a real failure mode. Merck’s environmental chapter attributes reptile burns generally to unscreened incandescent lights or other heat sources, with fluid loss, dehydration and secondary bacterial or fungal infection as common sequelae.

UVB: a live debate, presented as one
For years the answer was no. Merck’s professional husbandry table still marks the leopard gecko NS, no special lighting requirements, and its species caption says these geckos have fewer demands for special broad spectrum lighting than many other reptiles. Read the footnote to that table, though, and Merck qualifies its own abbreviation: no special lighting requirements, although broad spectrum lighting is still recommended because it is likely to have health benefits. The chapter text goes further, saying all reptiles including nocturnal and crepuscular species benefit from broad spectrum lighting, while reserving essential for UVB in most diurnal lizards and chelonians, a group that includes the bearded dragon.
The zoo lighting literature agrees. The JZAR UV-Tool assigns this species Ferguson zone 1, the crepuscular and shade dwelling band, zone range UVI 0 to 0.7 and maximum UVI 0.6 to 1.4, and concludes of nocturnal species that there would seem to be no reason to withhold full spectrum lighting, provided they can spend the daylight hours in an appropriate retreat with access to a UV-B component suitable for a shade dwelling or crepuscular species.
The experiments cut both ways. A 2020 trial in Comparative Biochemistry and Physiology B exposed juvenile leopard geckos to low level UVB from hatching to six months while supplementing every animal with dietary vitamin D3. The exposed group finished with higher 25 hydroxyvitamin D3, 61 plus or minus 20 against 38 plus or minus 8 nmol per litre, confirming that the skin does synthesise vitamin D from UVB. Growth and weight gain were similar, no clinical signs appeared, and the authors concluded that dietary vitamin D3 alone can meet the requirement for growth across those six months, while whether the higher metabolite levels carry other benefits remains to be investigated. JZAR reports an older result pointing the same way, that passive absorption of dietary calcium in vitamin D deprived leopard geckos appears effective enough to prevent metabolic bone disease.
So the honest answer is a shape, not a yes or a no. Cutaneous synthesis is real and measured; a health outcome from it has not been shown in this species; nothing calls low level UVB harmful at zone 1. Where the sources part company is on whether to fit a lamp at all. LafeberVet sits where practice has landed: provide low intensity full spectrum lighting during the day, because although leopard geckos are nocturnal, exposure to UVB seems to be helpful. The RSPCA goes further and treats it as a requirement, asking for a 2 to 5 percent UVB tube over the hot end running a half to a third of the vivarium length, and a gradient from UVI 0.7 in the basking zone down to zero in the shade. That ceiling is the top of JZAR’s zone 1 band, so the argument across these sources is whether to provide UVB at all, not how much of it to give.
If you fit one, the mechanics are sourced.
- Merck warns that almost every lamp is marketed as broad, full or natural spectrum, and that the label must actually say UVB. Its owner edition puts typical ultraviolet producing lights within 18 inches of resting or basking areas, with mercury vapour lamps several feet away.
- Output falls long before the light stops working, by wildly different amounts. Across the lamps JZAR tested, mean UVI loss after 4,000 hours was 39.9 percent, and it concluded some brands may not need replacing for at least a year; one product lost 64 percent after 1,000 hours, about three months at 10 to 12 hours a day. Log the date you fitted the bulb, treat any interval you were given as a guess, and check output with a UV index meter if you can.
- Ordinary glass and most plastics block UVB, so nothing transparent goes between lamp and animal, and the bulb stays physically inaccessible. Mount it above the animal, JZAR’s guidance, so the head shape and the upper eyelids shade the eyes.
- Melanin strongly absorbs UV, so JZAR warns that albino and hypomelanistic animals transmit more of it into the body and are likely to need much reduced exposure. If you keep an albino leopard gecko or another low pigment morph, treat any UVB as needing a lower level and deeper shade.
Hides, and the one that saves a shed
Three hides is the working standard, and it falls out of two sourced requirements rather than a published number. Merck’s owner edition says terrestrial and burrowing species require hiding places such as boxes, tree trunks or rocks; the professional chapter requires a warm end and a cool end. A gecko with cover at only one end must choose between the temperature it wants and feeling safe, so put a hide at each end.
The third is the humid hide, the most concrete welfare item on this page. Merck’s owner guidance says that once a reptile’s skin and eyes turn opaque, humidity should be slightly increased to help the shedding progress and reduce the risk of retained shed skin, by lightly misting the cage at least once a day plus a hide box with moist sphagnum moss or a soaking container. The professional chapter is stronger, saying high humidity microclimates are often critical for arid species, naming leopard geckos, to decrease dysecdysis.
Dysecdysis is the clinical word for a shed that goes wrong. Merck lists the causes as low humidity, skin parasites, nutritional deficiencies, infectious diseases, lack of suitable abrasive surfaces and decreased thyroid function, and says the parts that commonly stay behind are the eyecaps and bands of skin encircling the tail or toes. Its remedy is patience rather than force: soak the animal in warm water at 25 to 29 C (77 to 85 F) for several hours, then pull gently on the retained skin with a gauze sponge, and never force an eyecap off, because the new one underneath can be damaged. A permanently damp moss box prevents most of this.
Ambient humidity is a genuine disagreement, so take it as a range. Merck’s professional table gives leopard geckos 20 to 30 percent, footnoted that requirements are substantially greater during ecdysis; LafeberVet asks for roughly 40 to 60 percent. Both are current veterinary sources, twenty points apart. A dry enclosure with a reliably damp hide and a shallow water dish, which is what LafeberVet asks for, satisfies both. One warning applies at any target: Merck says decreasing ventilation to hold temperature and humidity up is ill advised and frequently causes skin and respiratory disease.
Substrate, and the impaction question handled honestly
Here is what is well sourced. Merck’s owner guidance states that sand, gravel and corncob are generally not recommended because they are ingested easily and can block reptiles’ gastrointestinal tracts, and the professional chapter says gravel and pebbles are not recommended for terrestrial species, being difficult to clean and often ingested. Newspaper is Merck’s substrate of choice for a sick reptile, because it is inexpensive, easy to clean and lets you see droppings.
Here is what I could not source: the claim that sand impaction is a leading cause of death in leopard geckos, or any figure for how often it happens, does not appear in the veterinary sources I read.
And here is a tension inside Merck itself. The same professional chapter that warns about ingestible particulates says soil, sand and natural leaf litter can be used if oven baked to sterilise them first, and the owner chapter names potting soil, leaf litter and smaller amounts of sand as appropriate substrates for many lizards. Merck is not banning sand; it is warning about loose ingestible material and the animals most likely to swallow it. The conservative line costs nothing: paper, tile, or a soil mix that is not loose dry particulate, kept clean, and skip the calcium sand sold as edible.
Feeding, gut loading, and the dusting schedule
The diet is insects, and the quality of the insect is decided before it reaches the gecko. Merck’s professional chapter is explicit that feeding insects a nutritionally complete diet high in calcium, and dusting them with a high calcium reptile supplement such as calcium carbonate immediately before offering them, is required to prevent nutritional deficiency. Both steps, not either.
LafeberVet gives one schedule. Offer a variety of gut loaded or dusted insects of appropriate size, naming crickets, Phoenix worms, mealworms and superworms, with the occasional pinky mouse. Dust a non breeding adult’s food weekly with a calcium carbonate or calcium gluconate supplement, more often for an actively breeding animal, devoid of or low in phosphorus and with a calcium to phosphorus ratio of at least 2 to 1. Add a general vitamin and mineral supplement once weekly. Feed adults once daily, offering prey in the late afternoon.
How often to feed an adult is another place these sources genuinely disagree, so do not take that last line as settled. The RSPCA feeds juveniles daily and adults every other day, half LafeberVet’s adult frequency, and sizes livefood at no bigger than the gecko’s head. Neither publishes what its interval rests on. What decides it is the animal: the RSPCA says to weigh your gecko regularly, LafeberVet puts the fat store in the tail base, which is the condition read this species gives you, and Merck names the failure mode on the generous side, that restricted opportunity for exercise combined with excessive caloric intake can quickly result in morbid obesity and hepatic lipidosis, corrected by decreasing calories slowly over many months. So take either interval as a starting point, size the prey to the head, and let a weekly weight and the tail tell you whether it was right; a gecko steadily gaining on daily feeding has a sourced alternative to move to.
Life stage moves it too: both sources feed a growing juvenile daily. The supplement schedule above is LafeberVet’s for a non breeding adult, and none of these sources publishes a juvenile supplement schedule, so a juvenile, a breeding female, or a gecko whose weight is moving is a conversation with your vet rather than a number off a page. The reason is sourced: Merck states that the reptiles developing secondary nutritional hyperparathyroidism are generally the rapidly growing herbivorous and insectivorous lizards and chelonians.
One detail is easy to miss. Merck notes that hypovitaminosis A is common in insectivorous lizards fed a diet deficient in preformed vitamin A, and that beta carotene, the commonly used supplement, cannot be metabolised by many reptiles. A product listing beta carotene rather than preformed vitamin A may not be doing the job you bought it for.
The tail, and why you never pick one up by it
The tail is a fat store and a fuse. LafeberVet describes the healthy leopard gecko as depositing significant fat stores in its tail base, which makes a broad tail the fastest body condition read you have, and a tail narrowing over a few weeks a reason to weigh the animal and call a vet.
It is also built to come off. LafeberVet describes a vertical fracture plane of fibroconnective tissue and cartilage running through each caudal vertebra, and notes the tail can fall off when grasped, sometimes under very little pressure. Merck’s clinical chapter states the rule directly: a lizard should never be grasped by the tail, because many species can drop it to evade capture. A dropped tail then moves on its own, and researchers working with this species recorded jumps, flips and swings from the detached tail.
It regrows, but not as the same organ. LafeberVet describes regrowth as a cartilaginous rod rather than rebuilt vertebrae, and the same group measured lower force, work and power in regenerated tail muscle than in the original. A regrown tail is usually shorter, blunter and differently patterned, and the animal is fine. Handle from underneath, and never lift, grab or restrain a gecko by the tail.
What actually turns up at the vet
Articles on this subject have long leaned on invented percentages. There is now a real dataset: on 31 July 2026 the Veterinary Record published online, ahead of print, a retrospective review by clinicians at the Royal Veterinary College and two other UK practices covering 214 leopard geckos seen between 2019 and 2023. The most commonly reported problems were non specific, reduced appetite, weight loss and lethargy. Of the 184 animals given a diagnosis, skin was involved in 37.9 percent, the gastrointestinal tract in 36.0 percent and the eyes in 22.0 percent, and the three most common diagnoses were dysecdysis at 30.0 percent, endoparasitic burden at 10.8 percent and presumptive hypovitaminosis A at 9.9 percent. Read it as a UK clinical caseload rather than as how often these things happen everywhere; the authors’ stated limitation is that the small sample and the limited detail in some records may have hidden links to specific disorders. Even read narrowly: the top three are husbandry and nutrition problems, shed problems lead, and impaction is not among them.
The conditions worth recognising, with signs as the sources give them.
- Metabolic bone disease, properly secondary nutritional hyperparathyroidism, is the most common bone disease in reptile practice, caused by poor diet or poor husbandry: a low calcium to phosphorus ratio, vitamin D3 deficiency, missing UVB, inadequate heat. Merck’s signs are anorexia, lethargy, inability to walk normally, swollen or distorted jaw and long bones, fractures, cloacal prolapse, muscle twitching and tetany, and its caption calls it a disease of mismanagement. Correcting diet and husbandry is the mainstay, with a prognosis Merck calls favourable, particularly if the animal is still eating.
- Dysecdysis, covered above. Check toes and eyelids after every shed.
- Vitamin A deficiency shows as poor growth, anorexia, stomatitis and swollen eyelids, with secondary respiratory infections, aural abscesses and oedema able to follow.
- Respiratory infection is common, and Merck ties its incidence to unfavourable environmental temperature or humidity, insufficient ventilation, unsanitary conditions and malnutrition. Open mouth breathing, nasal or glottal discharge and laboured breathing are frequent signs.
- Cryptosporidiosis earns its reputation. Merck records that many lizards including leopard geckos are affected primarily in the intestine, with diarrhoea, marked weight loss and chronic debilitation, and that apart from hyperimmune bovine colostrum no treatment has proved especially effective, with euthanasia a valid option. It also corrects an old belief: the species commonly found in reptiles appear not to affect mammals. Quarantine is therefore not optional, at Merck’s recommended 3 to 6 months for any new reptile.
None of this replaces a veterinarian, so find a reptile vet while your gecko is healthy. The Association of Reptile and Amphibian Veterinarians runs a public search whose results are its own members, listed by member type and largely self described, rather than board certified specialists. Read any hit that way.

Handling, temperament, and lifespan
Merck’s professional chapter calls leopard geckos easily bred in captivity and often considered an ideal pet species, especially for a novice owner. Keep early sessions short, stay low over a table or your lap, and give a new gecko a week or two of reliable feeding before handling it at all.
Lifespan is where numbers get repeated without provenance, so here is the chain. LafeberVet states 25 to 30 years. The AnAge longevity database records a maximum captive longevity of 28.5 years at a data quality it rates acceptable, and separately notes an estimate of up to 30 years in the wild attributed to Woodland Park Zoo. Follow AnAge’s own reference for that 28.5 and it is a private longevity web page rather than an institutional record, so treat it as an upper bound, not a documented maximum. A well kept leopard gecko is a commitment measured in decades. Sexual maturity arrives at 9 to 18 months.
The records that make this work
Everything above turns into three habits, and they are species specific rather than generic pet advice.
Weigh in grams, on a kitchen scale. LafeberVet’s adult range runs 45 to 90 grams, so a 5 gram loss is a real signal that looking at the animal will not show you. Merck’s clinical chapter makes the case: every reptile must be accurately weighed because drug dosing depends on it, and serial weights let a vet appraise growth, captive management, response to treatment, and whether disease is progressing. Weekly through the first month, monthly once the trend is flat. Weights go on a Creatures profile as physical measurement records.
Log every shed, with the date and how it came off. Dysecdysis was the single most common diagnosis in that 214 gecko review, so a shed history is the most diagnostically useful log this species has. On Creatures a shed goes in the routine care record, which carries a shedding assist entry for reptiles alongside tank and water checks and a parasite or mite check.
Log feeding and the bulb dates, plus the annual health check. Merck’s reasoning is worth borrowing: although no vaccinations are required for reptiles, an annual check helps confirm the animal is well nourished and free from disease and parasites, and the first visit establishes a record of the animal in healthy condition that becomes highly valuable if problems develop later. Leopard gecko care FAQ
Do leopard geckos need UVB? The sources genuinely split. Merck’s table marks the species NS, no special lighting requirement; the RSPCA asks for a gradient reaching UVI 0.7 at the basking zone. Low level UVB at Ferguson zone 1 is defensible either way, and dietary calcium and vitamin D3 are not optional under any of them.
What temperature does a leopard gecko need? About 32 C (90 F) at the substrate surface of the warm end, air across the enclosure of roughly 25 to 30 C (77 to 86 F), a drop of about 5 C at night, every heat source on a thermostat.
How big a tank does an adult need? Merck’s professional formula gives about 0.4 square metres, near 4.3 square feet, for a 20 cm adult, roughly a 36 by 18 inch footprint. Floor area is the dimension that formula scales and the one worth paying for, but height is not free: the RSPCA’s stated minimum is 60 by 40 by 30 cm, and the lamps and a little low climbing structure have to fit above the animal.
Why is my gecko’s shed stuck on its toes? Usually humidity. A hide box of damp sphagnum moss plus light daily misting once the skin goes dull is Merck’s own answer.
