A ball python spends most of its life doing very little, in a warm dark place, waiting. That is not a defect. It is a west and central African ambush predator that hides in rodent burrows and termite mounds through the day and comes out at dusk, and most good decisions about its care follow from taking that seriously rather than fighting it.
It also means the animal is easy to keep alive and easy to keep badly. A ball python will sit quietly in a box that is too small, too dry, or too cold long before anything looks wrong, so most of what a vet sees here traces back to the enclosure rather than to the snake. One habit pays off from week one: weigh the snake and write it down. A ball python that stops eating is what owners panic about most, and a weight trend turns that panic into data a vet can use. The enclosure, and the argument you should know about
The veterinary floor is arithmetic. Merck’s professional husbandry chapter gives boas and pythons 0.6 square metres of floor per metre of snake, and tells clinicians to pair that minimum with advice to provide the largest enclosure possible. A 1.2 m female needs about 0.72 square metres, which a 4 ft by 2 ft enclosure (roughly 0.74) just satisfies.
The welfare literature measures the snake instead. A 2020 assessment of more than 5,000 ball pythons at six pet expositions and across 113 YouTube videos, published in Animals, scored housing against RSPCA minimum recommendations: an enclosure at least as long as the snake, width and height each at least a third of that length, multiple shelters, a water bowl large enough to bathe fully submerged, and substrate allowing burrowing. The paper is candid that this is contested. Some governmental guidance has held enclosures shorter than the snake to be consistent with welfare, other guidance splits active from sedentary species, and its authors side with the reports arguing even a sedentary snake needs to straighten out fully. Both positions land in the same place for a pet: a 4 ft by 2 ft footprint clears Merck’s floor and lets almost any adult lie straight.
The commercial picture is different. Most ball pythons in North America are bred in rack systems, shelving units of shallow sliding bins with ventilation holes, heat at one end, and no lighting. A 2021 PLOS One study moved 35 ball pythons, most confiscated from keepers by the authorities, out of a rack (bins of 70 by 40 by 16 cm) into furnished terrariums of 100 by 50 by 50 cm and larger. Basking, climbing, burrowing, and bathing appeared only in the terrarium. Abnormal behaviour appeared almost exclusively in the rack: snakes pushing their mouths against the bin edges hard enough to deform the mouth temporarily, and ten pushing their noses through ventilation holes to widen them. Those behaviours stopped on transfer, so the authors decline to call it a classical stereotypy, but they conclude the rack does not meet the requirements of animal-appropriate housing.
The same paper lists the rack keepers’ case without dismissing it: better feeding response, faster growth, younger breeding age, easier reproduction, less aggression, and a flat bin suiting a burrow-dwelling animal for which light is a stressor. It sets that against a 2013 expert report from German veterinary and animal-protection bodies. None of it makes a rack breeder a bad keeper of breeding stock, but the box your snake grew up in is not the one to copy at home.
Heat: a thermostat, every single time
Three veterinary sources give three bands. Merck’s professional species table puts the preferred zone at 25 to 30 C (77 to 86 F), footnoted that basking should run about 5 C warmer and temperatures fall about 5 C at night. LafeberVet’s clinical table is warmer and narrower: 27 to 29 C (80 to 85 F), a substrate warm spot of 31 to 35 C (88 to 95 F), and a night low of 25.6 to 26.6 C (78 to 80 F). The German expert report on minimum requirements for keeping reptiles, quoted in the PLOS study above, sets 26 to 32 C with the same 5 C night drop and a localised basking spot of 38 C. Give the snake a gradient spanning those bands and let it choose. Merck’s pet-owner edition wants a range end to end, and the professional chapter wants heaters thermostat controlled, screened from the animals, and positioned toward one end. Three rules people skip:
Every heat source runs through a thermostat. Merck’s wording is that heat sources should be attached to programmable thermostats that turn the heat on and off automatically when the temperature gets too cool or too hot. An unregulated mat does not stop climbing at your target.
Measure at the surface, at both ends. Merck asks for at least two thermometers, one per end, checked just above the substrate where the animal sits. Under-tank heaters should cover no more than 30 percent of the cage space, and overhead sources should be shielded from contact and placed more than 18 inches (45 cm) from the ground covering.
No heat rocks. The professional chapter says hot rocks frequently result in burns in larger animals and should be avoided; the pet-owner edition says their heat is inconsistent and may cause burns. Merck’s environmental disease chapter attributes burns generally to unscreened incandescent lights or other heat sources, with fluid loss, dehydration, and secondary bacterial or fungal infection as common sequelae. A snake on a failed mat does not move away in time.
Humidity is this species’ defining variable
Merck’s professional table gives ball pythons 50 to 80 percent relative humidity, footnoted that requirements are substantially greater during ecdysis. Both ends of that range hurt.
Too dry and you get dysecdysis, incomplete or abnormal shedding. Merck’s pet-owner chapter on reptile disorders lists low humidity first among its causes, ahead of skin parasites, nutritional deficiency, infectious disease, missing abrasive surfaces, and low thyroid function, and says the spectacles over the eyes and bands of skin around the tail or toes are what stay behind. The University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine puts it harder through Dr. Sarah Reich: a retained shed, especially a layered one, can damage the underlying scales and tissue to the point that the animal may never have a normal shed again, and the usual cause is humidity that is too low.
Too wet plus dirty and you get skin disease. Merck’s chapter on bacterial disease describes ulcerative dermatitis, commonly called scale rot, as occurring in snakes and lizards kept in unhygienic conditions with excessive humidity and moisture, and its illustrating photograph is a ball python captioned with three predisposing factors: high humidity or wetness, poor hygiene, and unscreened floor heating. Read on, though, because Merck complicates its own story here: classic necrotic dermatitis in the ball python more often develops from within than from a skin injury, and can occur even under ideal conditions. Both editions carry that caveat, so good husbandry lowers the risk without making a lesion on the belly scales someone else’s problem.
The same chapter calls respiratory infections common, with incidence influenced by parasitism, unfavourable temperature or humidity, insufficient ventilation, unsanitary conditions, concurrent disease, and malnutrition. Ventilation is the trap, because the instinctive fix for low humidity is to tape over the mesh, and the professional chapter says decreasing ventilation to maintain temperature and humidity is ill advised and frequently causes skin and respiratory disease. Hold humidity with water, not by sealing the box.
Four things do the work. A moisture-holding substrate: Merck names cypress mulch as moisture holding and mould resistant, soil and peat moss as moisture holding and diggable. A large water bowl, since Merck requires water at all times and notes many species lose water through the skin when deprived of soaking areas. A hygrometer, because humidity is the one variable you cannot judge by looking. And a humid hide, which Merck’s shedding advice describes as a hide box with moist sphagnum moss. In the wild, per the PLOS study, this snake spends the day in a rodent burrow or termite mound at relatively constant temperature and humidity. A hide packed with damp moss is that burrow.

Hides, substrate, and the rest of the floor
Merck notes that many reptiles appear nervous and insecure in captivity, and that cage furniture and hiding spaces reduce it. For a ball python that is the core requirement, not decoration. Provide at least two hides, one at each end of the gradient, each snug enough to cover the coiled snake completely: the Animals assessment scored a shelter as adequate only at 100 percent coverage of the coiled snake, and the RSPCA recommendations behind it call for multiple shelters. One hide forces a choice between the temperature the snake wants and the cover it wants, and I found no study settling which it sacrifices, so treat two as the way to avoid the question.
Merck lists newspaper, recycled paper based bedding, peat moss, potting soil, aspen shavings, cypress mulch, walnut bedding, large rocks, alfalfa pellets, and artificial turf as substrates used successfully for snakes. It advises against sand, gravel, and corncob, ingested easily and able to block the gastrointestinal tract, and against cedar and pine shavings, whose oils can cause breathing and neurologic problems. It also warns against feeding on loose substrates, which go down with the meal, and its solution is a separate cage on newspaper. If you feed in the enclosure instead, serve the meal on something the snake cannot swallow.
Merck prefers wood, plastic, and fiberglass to glass aquaria, which insulate poorly, ventilate badly even under a full mesh top, and offer a visibility owners like and the animal may find stressful. It also asks you to have the habitat completely ready and secure before the animal comes home. Take secure literally, because those pythons in the PLOS study widened ventilation holes with burrowing movements. Fit a lock, and check it after every clean.

Feeding: size, frequency, and frozen versus live
Prey size has a clean rule. Merck’s chapter on nutrition in snakes states that prey size is usually proportional to snake size and should not be much larger in diameter than the snake’s head. Pythons can enlarge the mouth to swallow larger prey, so the limit is not what the snake physically can get down. Food that leaves a visible lump for days is oversized, not impressive.
Frequency is looser than the internet suggests. The same chapter says most snake species should be fed every one to two weeks, and that some large, less active snakes typically go six weeks between feedings. LafeberVet’s clinical guide to feeding the hospitalized snake gives the same spread: depending on age and size, snakes may be fed multiple times in one week or every two to four weeks, many rodent-feeding snakes eat once weekly, and a baby snake may feed every other day. Feed appropriately sized prey on a fixed interval and let the weight trend tell you whether the interval is right.
Prey should be dead. Merck states that feeding live rodents is not advised, and is illegal in many countries, because of the dangers of prey-induced trauma to lethargic reptiles and the welfare of the live prey. Rodents should be offered freshly killed, or thawed and warmed after a short period of freezing, with thawing under refrigeration and prey served at room temperature or preferably warmer, never cold.
The clinical picture is worth seeing once. In a University of Illinois veterinary column, Dr. Krista Keller, board certified in zoological medicine, describes the case behind the photograph she supplied: a five year old red tailed boa with a prey-induced wound three inches long by two inches wide, deep enough that spinal bone was visible, needing a large surgery and six months of healing. Rodent bites, she says, range from superficial to deep punctures that can damage a snake’s eyes, tongue, mouth, internal organs, and spine, and they introduce bacteria. She disposes of both arguments for live feeding: the snake eats the same tissues either way and gets the same nutrition, and enrichment comes from a well organised, periodically changed enclosure rather than from prey. Purchased rodents are euthanised at the supplier, typically by CO2 inhalation, which she notes the American Veterinary Medical Association recognises as humane and rapid. A snake can be switched to pre-killed safely at any age, though one raised on live may need an extended training period.
Scenting works, and Merck says as much: the scent of preferred foods can be rubbed on new items. In the PLOS study, defrosted mice were covered with guinea pig fur to match what those confiscated snakes had been raised on, and every feed-refusing snake finally ate. One last rule: do not handle a snake for three days after a meal, to reduce the chance of regurgitation.
When a ball python stops eating
This is the most searched ball python problem, and the one where confident bad advice does the most harm in both directions. Some owners panic at week two. Others let a snake fast for six months on the strength of a forum post while it quietly loses a third of its body weight.
Start with what is genuinely normal. Merck’s pet-owner chapter on routine health care records that snakes lose their appetite before shedding, as the colour dulls and the eyecaps go opaque, so a refusal arriving with a shed cycle explains itself. Beyond that, LafeberVet is explicit that defining anorexia in snakes can be tricky: fasting may be expected at certain times of year, gravid females and actively breeding males eat less or go off food entirely, and some species fast for weeks or months as an adaptation to heat, cold, drought, or scarcity. It names large boas and pythons among those that may not eat for extended periods, and points at the physiology. Research on the ball python, the ratsnake, and the western diamondback rattlesnake found these species tolerate starvation by depressing resting metabolic demand by up to 72 percent, burning fat while sparing protein: McCue’s 2007 study in Zoology, which ran 168 days of starvation across the three. A ball python is built to skip meals.
None of that says your snake is fine. LafeberVet’s decision sequence opens by asking whether the species normally brumates in the wild, and Merck’s husbandry table answers that here: no hibernation requirement is listed for the ball python, where one is listed for corn and rat snakes. So you go straight to its next two questions, which are whether there is weight loss and what the body condition is, with muscle and small to moderate amounts of fat palpable over the vertebral processes. LafeberVet recommends regular weighing of any fasting reptile, warns that prolonged or repeated fasts in less than ideal conditions can be debilitating, and lists husbandry stress as a cause of anorexia in its own right, asking for a history covering habitat size and furnishings, temperature and humidity ranges, photoperiod, and vibration. Its guide to nutritional support in reptiles puts a number on the tipping point: support is indicated in a reptile with a 10 percent drop in body weight.
So, a threshold built only from what those sources support:
- Check the enclosure before changing anything else. Warm side, cool side, surface temperatures, humidity, hides, and whether anything recently changed. Husbandry is the first differential, not the last.
- Weigh weekly through any refusal. A stable weight across a long fast in an otherwise normal snake is the picture the literature describes as tolerable. A falling one is not, and 10 percent is the drop clinicians treat as significant.
- Stop waiting if anything else is wrong. Weight loss, a poor or retained shed, open-mouth breathing, discharge, regurgitation, lethargy, mites, or lumps and sores. Merck lists anorexia together with weight loss, poor wound healing, poor shedding, and regurgitation as the early history of inclusion body disease. Refusal plus a second sign is a veterinary problem, not a feeding problem.
- Go now, whatever the calendar says, for burns, prolapse, a wound from live prey, trauma, or open-mouth breathing.
Log every offer, including the refusals. “He has not eaten in a while” is not a history. “Eleven refusals since 4 March, weight down 40 g from 1,420 g, last shed complete” is one, and it is the difference between a diagnostic appointment and a guessing appointment.
Shedding
Merck’s pet-owner edition describes the sequence: appetite drops, the colour goes dull and mildly translucent, the eyecaps turn opaque, irritability is frequent, and the shed begins around the mouth and turns the old skin inside out as one piece. That opaque or blue phase is the cue to act, and Merck’s instruction is that once skin and eyes become opaque, humidity should be slightly increased to help the shed progress and reduce the risk of retained skin. Moderately abrasive surfaces to rub on help.
So leave the snake alone through blue, keep the humid hide genuinely damp, and check the shed instead of binning it. You want one complete piece and the two eyecaps, which come off as small clear discs. Retained spectacles and rings of skin around the tail are the classic failures, and Merck treats retained spectacles with an eye ointment for several days rather than picking. Repeated poor sheds mean the humidity is wrong, or there are mites, or something else is going on.
The problems worth recognising early
Most of what goes wrong is on a short list, and none of it is a home-treatment project, which is the argument for finding a vet who sees reptiles before you need one. What follows is what to notice.
- Respiratory infection. Merck names open-mouth breathing, nasal or glottal discharge, and dyspnea as frequent signs; its illustrating photograph for reptile pneumonia is a ball python breathing open-mouthed. Audible clicks or bubbles count. A reptile with a respiratory infection should be kept at the mid to upper range of its preferred temperature zone, because that is how the immune system works.
- Snake mites. Merck’s parasitology chapter names Ophionyssus natricis as the common snake mite, associated with anaemia and a vector for bacterial and viral disease, with coarse skin and frequent dysecdysis. Most mites are under 1.5 mm and gather around the eyes and in the folds of face and neck; an affected snake soaks to drown them, and rubbing it over white paper drops enough to see. Control treats the animal and the environment.
- Scale rot. Reddening, areas of dead skin, sores, and discharge, most often from damp dirty bedding, humidity, and unscreened floor heating, with septicaemia and death possible untreated. Merck calls blister disease an early stage of the same thing.
- Mouth rot. Infectious stomatitis starts as petechiae in the oral cavity, progresses to caseous material along the dental arcades, and in severe cases to osteomyelitis of the jaw. Aspirating infected material can cause a secondary pneumonia, so a mouth problem is urgent rather than cosmetic.
- Inclusion body disease. Merck’s virology chapter records boas and pythons as most commonly affected, the agent now confirmed as a reptarenavirus, and a history of unthriftiness, anorexia, weight loss, secondary bacterial infections, poor wound healing, dysecdysis, and regurgitation. It is not curable. The same chapter notes a nidovirus causing pneumonia and stomatitis in pythons and boas. Hence Merck’s quarantine period of three to six months for new reptiles, and why a second snake is a bigger decision than it looks.
Merck’s pet-owner guidance is a check-up and fecal examination annually, and since no vaccinations are required for reptiles that yearly visit is effectively the whole preventive programme. It also asks you to wash your hands with a disinfecting soap after handling the snake or anything from its enclosure, not to eat, drink, or kiss it, and to supervise children. Salmonella is frequently isolated from clinically healthy reptiles and considered part of their normal gut flora, so a healthy-looking snake can still carry it.
Handling, temperament, and how long this lasts
Merck describes ball pythons as tending to be shy and docile, with husbandry and nutritional demands that are relatively easy to meet. The Animals assessment adds the other half: that reputation rests substantially on the snake’s tendency to curl into a ball rather than bite, and head-hiding behaviour is considered a response related to fear, defence, or stress rather than contentment. It cites work by Kreger and Mench in which ball pythons restrained in a container before handling showed a significant rise in plasma corticosterone, potentially an acute stress response. Read a tight ball as the snake saying it has had enough.
Merck’s clinical procedures chapter describes the head held behind the occiput with the other hand supporting the body, and more handlers as the animal gets bigger, because restraining the head that way supports the cranial-cervical junction, which has only a single occiput and can be prone to dislocation. The owner’s version is that the body is always carried, never left hanging from one grip. Short, calm, frequent sessions beat long ones, and nothing for three days after a meal.
Colour and pattern do not change the husbandry above, with one documented exception. A 2022 PLOS One study imaged the inner ears of wild type and spider morph ball pythons and reported deviant morphology of the semicircular canals, ampullae, and sacculus in the spider morph, in animals that all showed the wobble condition of head twisting, impaired locomotion, and difficulty striking or constricting prey. The 2021 housing study independently saw wobbling regardless of housing type, exclusively in the spider morph and morphs resembling it. Ask a breeder about it.
Then the commitment. The Animal Diversity Web account for Python regius puts the average captive lifespan at 20 years against about 10 in the wild, with captive maxima from 28 years at the Oakland Zoo to 50 at the Philadelphia Zoo; the AnAge longevity database records 47.5 years. The record is unsettled; the point for a buyer is not. This animal can outlast a mortgage, so decide now who takes it if your life changes.

The records that make ball python care easier
Almost everything above is a slow trend rather than an event, and Merck’s professional chapter asks for the obvious response: keep detailed records of changes in husbandry or nutrition, in-contact animals, health issues, and previous problems and treatments.
Weight is the anchor. Merck states that every reptile must be accurately weighed, because an accurate weight avoids deaths from drug overdoses, particularly anesthetics and aminoglycosides, and because serial weights let a clinician appraise growth, captive management, response to treatment, and whether disease is progressing or resolving. For a ball python that means grams on a kitchen scale, monthly when settled and weekly through any fast, food change, or worry. On Creatures it is the physical measurement record, which carries weight and body condition fields.
Log the sheds and the refusals. There is no dedicated shed record type on Creatures, and it is better to say so than to imply one exists. What does exist is the routine care record, whose care-type list includes “Shedding Assist (reptile)”, “Parasite / Mite Check”, and “Tank / Water Check (fish / amphibian / reptile)”. Whether a shed came off whole, and whether both eyecaps were in it, turns humidity from guesswork into a record.
Set the reminders. The annual examination and fecal check, the deep clean, the substrate change. Creatures reminders have a due-date dashboard and a calendar feed. Medical records (examinations, test results, medication, surgery) are private by default, and files attach to the record, so a clinic invoice or a photo of a lesion travels with the entry.
Ball python care FAQ
Do ball pythons need UVB? Merck’s husbandry table marks this species NS, no special lighting requirements, unlike the diurnal reptiles it marks BS for essential broad-spectrum lighting, the bearded dragon among them. The same footnote adds that broad-spectrum lighting is still recommended, and the 2021 PLOS housing study used a UV lamp in its furnished terrariums. A day and night cycle is not optional; a UVB fixture is a recommended extra rather than a stated requirement here.
My ball python has not eaten in two months. Is that an emergency? Not by itself. Refusal before a shed is normal, and this is a species documented to tolerate long fasts. What makes it a veterinary matter is weight loss, a poor shed, open-mouth breathing, discharge, regurgitation, lethargy, or mites. Weigh weekly and check the enclosure first.
Frozen or live? Frozen and thawed, or freshly killed. Merck advises against live rodents because of prey-induced trauma and prey welfare, and a rodent bite can reach a snake’s eyes, mouth, organs, or spine.
