A corn snake asks for four things and is unforgiving about exactly one of them. It needs a big enough box, a warm end and a cool end, a meal every week or two, and a lid that actually latches. Get the first three roughly right and you have an animal that will live with you for a decade or more with very little drama. Get the fourth one wrong once and you will spend an evening moving furniture.
That is why this species became the snake almost everyone recommends first. Bowling Green State University’s herpetarium sums up its own corn snake in one line on its record sheet: a good beginner snake, docile and happy to be held, with the caveat that hatchlings are escape artists so the enclosure must be secure. One habit is worth starting on day one. Almost everything that goes wrong with a captive snake shows up first as a number rather than a symptom: a weight that stopped climbing, a shed that came off in pieces, a warm end that drifted two degrees after you moved the vivarium. The Merck Veterinary Manual’s reptile husbandry chapter (professional version, last reviewed July 2025) tells owners plainly to keep detailed records of husbandry changes, health issues, and previous problems and treatments. Why this is the snake everyone recommends first
Three things put the corn snake at the top of the beginner lists, and each is a claim someone actually made rather than folklore.
Size. An adult reaches around 150 cm according to the RSPCA’s corn snake guidance, and BGSU gives 2.5 to 5 feet with a 6 foot record. That is a snake one person can lift, house in a piece of furniture, and carry to a vet.
Temperament. BGSU describes the corn snake as docile and inclined to be held; the RSPCA calls the species quite placid and says corn snakes can become used to regular handling. Neither promises an animal that enjoys attention the way a dog does, and neither should be read that way.
Feeding response. BGSU notes that corn snakes readily take frozen and thawed prey. That sounds minor until you have kept a snake that refuses food for two months.
One caveat the beginner lists skip: a corn snake is a rat snake, and rat snakes climb. The RSPCA is explicit that they are active, will climb given the opportunity, and should have branches or peg boards to do it on. Height and furniture are not decoration for this species.
The enclosure, and why the old numbers were too small
This is where published guidance has genuinely moved, and it is worth seeing the shift rather than being handed one number.
The older position is easy to find. BGSU’s care sheet, last updated in 2016, lists captive care as a 20 to 30 gallon aquarium. Much of the advice still circulating descends from care sheets of that generation.
The modern position is different. A 2021 review in the journal Animals, Getting It Straight: Accommodating Rectilinear Behavior in Captive Snakes, searched the literature on snake enclosure size and sorted the recommendations by their evidence base. It found that recommendations for enclosures smaller than one snake length were rule of thumb practices unsupported by scientific evidence, while recommendations allowing a snake to fully stretch drew on evidence and welfare reasoning. Its conclusion is that enclosures allowing snakes to fully stretch now constitute mainstream guidance and good practice as a minimum.
Two current sources put numbers on that. The RSPCA says a corn snake needs a vivarium that allows it to fully stretch out, and gives the working rule: at least the snake’s length long, by a third of its length for width and height. For a 150 cm snake that is 150 by 50 by 50 cm. Merck’s husbandry table works in floor area instead and gives kingsnakes and rat snakes 0.6 square metres per metre of snake, so a 1.2 metre snake needs about 0.72 square metres, roughly a 120 by 60 cm footprint.
Those two rules do not produce identical boxes. What they agree on is that the answer scales with the animal, and that a 30 gallon tank is not it for an adult.
The material matters too. Glass aquaria are common, but glass insulates poorly, heat loss can cause dramatic temperature fluctuations, and even a full mesh top can leave ventilation hampered. Wood, plastic and fiberglass are described as more versatile and preferable.
One honest exception, from the RSPCA: a hatchling can become stressed in a very large vivarium, which is linked to predator avoidance. Either house it smaller and move up as it grows, or fill a large enclosure with enough small confined spaces that it never crosses open ground.

The lid is the part people get wrong
Every source that discusses housing says this in some form. The RSPCA opens its vivarium section by saying the enclosure must be secure to prevent escape. BGSU adds the detail that matters most: hatchlings are escape artists.
Treat that as husbandry, not as a joke about snakes. A hatchling corn snake is about the thickness of a pencil, and it does not need an open door. It needs a gap.
Check the closure every time, on the way out of the room rather than on the way past. A sliding glass front needs its lock actually engaged, not just pushed shut. A mesh top needs clips at every corner, because a snake pushing upward with several inches of body can lift an unclipped lid.
Check the gaps, not just the door. Run a finger along the door runners, around cable exits for heat and lighting, around ventilation panels, and along any seam where two panels meet. If a pencil fits, a hatchling fits.
Watch when the snake is most motivated. Snakes test their enclosures more when something is off: too warm, too dry, hungry, or in shed. A snake suddenly patrolling the seams every evening is usually telling you about the enclosure before it tells you about the lid.
If one does get out, do not tear the house apart. Corn snakes are secretive and thermally motivated, so search low, dark, warm, and enclosed: behind and under appliances, inside furniture, under the bed frame, in the airing cupboard, behind books. Shut interior doors to limit the area, put the snake’s hide and water bowl on the floor of that room, and check at dawn and dusk, when the RSPCA notes corn snakes are mainly active. Most are found within a room or two of the enclosure, days later, entirely fine.
Heat: a gradient, and a thermostat every time
Reptiles run on the temperature you give them, so the enclosure has to offer a choice: a heat source at one end creating a basking zone, the opposite end left cool. Position the heater toward one end to provide a thermal gradient, as Merck’s husbandry chapter puts it.
The numbers, from the RSPCA, are a basking zone of 28 to 30 C (82 to 86 F) and a cool end of 20 to 24 C (68 to 75 F). What makes them usable is where you measure: the RSPCA says to put the thermostat probe just above the substrate at the level where the snake will sit, and to check the basking temperature with a digital thermometer at that same level. A reading taken near the roof is not the reading the snake experiences.
Worth knowing: the same table frames this differently, listing the corn or rat snake at 25 to 30 C (77 to 86 F), with a footnote stating these are air temperature gradients, basking spots generally 5 C warmer and a 5 C night drop. The two are measured differently rather than in conflict, and the RSPCA’s are written for a keeper holding a probe. At night the RSPCA says the heat can be switched off and the enclosure can safely fall to 16 to 20 C (61 to 68 F) at normal household temperatures; if your room goes colder, use non light emitting heat such as a ceramic heater or a safely set up mat.
Now the part that is not optional. The RSPCA states that a thermostat must be used with all heat sources, and that heat lamps must be guarded against burns or a shattered bulb. Heaters should be thermostat controlled and screened from the animals, Merck says, and hot rocks frequently result in burns and should be avoided. Merck’s chapter on environmental diseases of reptiles (professional version, last updated July 2025) states the consequence: burns are generally associated with unscreened incandescent lights or other heat sources, with fluid loss, dehydration, and secondary bacterial or fungal infections as common sequelae.
That is why an unregulated mat or a heat rock is a genuine hazard rather than a preference. A mat with no thermostat has exactly one temperature, whatever it reaches, and a snake pressed against it cannot reliably tell that it is being injured. Keep the enclosure away from radiators and direct sunlight for the same reason.
Does a corn snake need UVB?
Here reputable sources genuinely disagree, so it is more useful to see the disagreement than to be handed a verdict.
Merck’s husbandry table marks the corn or rat snake as NS, defined in its footnote as no special lighting requirements, while adding that broad spectrum lighting is still recommended because it is likely to have health benefits. BGSU’s 2016 sheet says simply that no special lighting is needed. The body text is consistent with both: all reptiles benefit from broad spectrum lighting, but UVB is described as especially important for most diurnal lizards and chelonians.
The RSPCA takes a stronger position. Its current guidance says corn snakes require a UVB gradient running from UVI 1.0 in the basking zone to zero in the shade, from a low output 2 to 7 percent tube over the warm end running between a half and a third of the vivarium’s length. It adds a useful detail for the common pale morphs: albino corn snakes need lower levels, a maximum of 0.7 in the basking zone.
There is direct evidence in this species too. Acierno and colleagues, in the American Journal of Veterinary Research in 2008, gave 12 corn snakes either no supplemental lighting or two full spectrum bulbs for 28 days. Plasma 25 hydroxyvitamin D3 came out at 196 nmol/L in the lit group against 57.17 nmol/L in the controls, a significant difference. The authors’ own conclusion is the careful one: the findings gave important insight into UV requirements for corn snakes, and further investigation is needed before exact husbandry requirements can be determined.
The fair summary: a corn snake exposed to UVB measurably makes more vitamin D, and nobody has yet established how much it needs. Merck and an older university sheet say it is not required, the RSPCA says it is and specifies a level, none says it is harmful at appropriate levels, and one tells you to dial it down for an albino.
If you fit UVB, fit it properly. Most transparent plastic and glass barriers filter UVB out, Merck notes, fluorescent tubes need to be under 30 cm from the animal and replaced every 9 to 12 months, and a 12 hour photoperiod suits general maintenance. The RSPCA agrees on 12 hours, and adds that output should be checked with a UV Index meter at the animal’s level and that the lamp must be guarded like any other.
Humidity, hides, and substrate
The RSPCA targets 40 to 50 percent humidity, measured with a hygrometer, and says that if it reads too high the vivarium needs more ventilation rather than less. Merck’s table gives a wider 30 to 70 percent band, with a footnote that humidity requirements are substantially greater during ecdysis, the shed. The importance of humidity has historically been underappreciated, Merck observes, and it warns against the tempting shortcut of reducing ventilation to hold temperature and humidity, which frequently causes skin and respiratory disease.
Hides matter as much as the number. The RSPCA’s rule is at least two, one at either end, so that the snake can choose its temperature without having to compromise on feeling secure. That sentence is the whole argument: a snake with one hide on the cool end and a basking spot on the warm end is being asked to pick one need over the other, and it will usually pick security and stay too cold. Sizing matters too: a hide must be large enough for the snake to fit inside but not so large that its body does not touch the sides when coiled. A third hide packed with moistened moss is the humid hide, and it is the cheapest fix for a snake with imperfect sheds.
For substrate the RSPCA recommends organic soils or reptile soil and sand mixes, and gives a working recipe of roughly 60 percent soil, 30 percent sand and 10 percent leaves, with the leaves sterilised in boiling water and dried first. Sand alone is out, because it can irritate the skin. Paper towel or newspaper is fine for a brand new snake while you watch its droppings and appetite, but the RSPCA treats that as temporary because it does not allow natural behaviour. That is compatible with Merck’s list, which adds one clear prohibition: gravel and pebbles are not recommended for terrestrial species, because they are difficult to clean and often ingested, leading to potential obstruction of the digestive tract.
Feeding
Corn snakes eat whole prey, and in captivity that means mice. The RSPCA’s schedule is hatchlings starting on one pinky every 5 to 6 days, moving up in prey size as they grow, to one adult mouse every 7 to 14 days. BGSU gives once a week, 1 to 3 items per feeding depending on size. Those are compatible: weekly sits in the middle of the adult range.
On prey size the sources use two different rules. The species specific ones go by girth: the RSPCA says offer prey slightly wider than the widest part of the snake’s body, and BGSU says the item should be as big around as the fattest part of the snake. Merck’s general snake nutrition chapter goes by head instead, saying prey should not be much larger in diameter than the snake’s head. The girth rule is the one written for this species and it is the more generous of the two, so sizing to the head is the conservative option if you are new.
Frozen and thawed prey is the standard, and the reason is not squeamishness. Merck’s reptile emergencies chapter (pet owner version, last updated September 2024) says bites inflicted by uneaten prey cause traumatic injuries that may become infected and inflamed, that reptiles should where possible be offered rodents freshly killed or frozen and thawed to prevent injury to the reptile, and that any reptile with a prey inflicted wound should be seen by a vet. It notes that feeding live prey is illegal in many countries, and that uneaten dead prey should be discarded after 24 hours. BGSU’s note that corn snakes readily take frozen and thawed removes most of the practical objection.
The RSPCA says to feed inside the vivarium using tongs. Merck’s nutrition chapter mentions that routinely handled snakes can be fed in a separate tank to decrease biting, which is the older practice; tongs solve the same problem without moving a snake around its meal. The RSPCA also suggests varying the diet with quail or rats every month or so, weighing regularly, and notes that supplements are not needed on good quality whole prey.
Then the rule that costs the most when ignored: do not handle a snake after it has eaten. Merck’s snake nutrition chapter (last updated September 2025) says snakes should not be handled for 3 days after feeding, to decrease the chance of regurgitation. The RSPCA says 48 hours. Merck’s clinical procedures chapter gives the mechanism: a recently fed snake has a midbody swelling from the prey in its stomach, and handling it may lead to regurgitation. The figures disagree, so take the longer one when unsure. The RSPCA adds a second reason: do not handle a snake straight after handling prey, because it may smell food on you and bite. Wash your hands first.
Handling and taming

The RSPCA’s technique is worth following literally: gently scoop the snake up with one hand underneath near the head and the other nearer the tail, supporting the whole animal. Never grab, which causes stress and can lead a snake to struggle or bite. A corn snake that feels threatened often pulls its head back into an S shape seen from above, and the right response is to leave it alone and try another time.
Keep sessions short. The RSPCA gives 10 to 15 minutes as usually safe, and the reason is thermal rather than behavioural: a snake out of its enclosure is losing core temperature into your room.
Two situations call for leaving the snake alone entirely: after a meal, and around a shed, when the RSPCA notes corn snakes may behave defensively. Both are temporary. Wash your hands before and after handling the snake or its equipment, because reptiles can carry salmonella. And give a new snake its first week undisturbed, in a vivarium the RSPCA says should have been set up and running for a week before the animal arrived.
Shedding

Snakes shed in one complete piece, and the RSPCA is careful to say there is no fixed schedule: it happens more often in a young growing snake, and there is no rule for how often. Beforehand the colours dull and the eyes go cloudy, the stage keepers call being in blue or opaque. The snake will often hide away, use the humid hide if it has one, then rub against objects in the vivarium to work the old skin off.
An incomplete shed has a name and a list of causes. Merck’s pet owner chapter on reptile disorders (last updated May 2026) calls it dysecdysis, and lists low humidity, skin parasites, nutritional deficiencies, infectious disease, lack of suitable abrasive surfaces, and reduced thyroid function among the contributors. Note the third and fifth: a snake with mites, or with nothing rough to rub against, will shed badly however good the humidity is.
Two things need attention rather than patience: retained eye caps, the clear spectacles over the eyes, and bands of retained skin encircling the tail. Retained spectacles are best treated, Merck says, with an eye ointment for several days until the spectacle falls off or can be gently lifted with fine forceps, and it is emphatic that eyecaps should never be forced off because of the risk of damaging the new one underneath. The RSPCA says eye caps left after a shed should be removed as soon as possible and that a reptile vet can show you how. For retained skin elsewhere, Merck describes soaking the animal in warm water at 77 to 85 F (25 to 29 C) for several hours, then easing the skin off with a gauze sponge. The RSPCA agrees on the warm bath and adds the important negative: do not pull, because you can damage the new skin underneath.
If a snake sheds badly more than once, treat it as an enclosure problem rather than a snake problem. The RSPCA says repeated shedding issues can usually be improved with simple adjustments to the vivarium’s conditions, and a humid hide is the usual first one.
Brumation, and when a fast is normal
Merck’s husbandry table answers this directly: in its hibernation column the corn or rat snake is one of the species marked Yes, alongside Greek and box tortoises, while ball pythons, boas, leopard geckos and bearded dragons are marked No.
The RSPCA describes brumation as a natural energy saving process seen in some individuals during cooler months, a bit like hibernation, triggered by falling daylight hours and air pressure. BGSU, writing about breeding, puts a window and a temperature on it: December to mid February at 63 to 72 F.
The practical question is when a winter fast is normal and when it is a vet visit, and the RSPCA gives the cleanest test available: a brumating snake may reduce how much it eats but should not lose weight. A snake off food in midwinter, holding its weight and otherwise bright, is behaving like a corn snake. A snake that is losing weight, or off food outside that seasonal window, or off food with any other sign at all, is a snake to book in. So is a snake in its first year, which does not have the reserves for a long fast. This is the single best argument for a weight log: without one, “is he losing weight?” is a guess.
Common problems and what they look like
These are the conditions corn snake keepers actually meet, with only the signs the sources name.
Respiratory infection. Merck’s pet owner chapter says respiratory infections including pneumonia are common in reptiles, and lists open mouth breathing, discharge from the nose, and difficulty breathing as frequent signs. Its named causes read as a husbandry checklist: unfavourable environmental temperatures, unsanitary conditions, parasites, other diseases, malnutrition, and vitamin A deficiency. Treatment starts with correcting the environment.
Mites. The RSPCA describes snake mites lodging under the scales and feeding on blood, and gives two signs a keeper can spot: small black specks on the snake or around the water bowl, and a snake spending unusually long periods sitting in its water. They can also cause reduced energy and, in heavy infestations, death by anaemia, Merck adds, and may transmit disease organisms between animals; affected skin looks coarse and may shed abnormally, and most mites are under 1.5 mm and cluster around the eyes and the skin folds of the face and neck. They are visible to the naked eye but hard to see in small numbers.
Scale rot and blister disease. Merck describes blister disease as an early stage of scale rot, in which the skin develops pustules or blisters that may heal without progressing to ulcers if treated early. It also flags the trap: low grade heat injury can look like blister disease if it produces fluid filled blisters. The RSPCA’s healthy baseline is the useful one to hold in your head: skin should be smooth and free of blisters, and blisters can indicate a snake kept damp.
Mouth rot. Both sources name infectious stomatitis. Untreated, Merck notes, it can extend into the jaw bones and lead on to respiratory or gastrointestinal infection.
Regurgitation. Handling too soon after a meal is the avoidable cause. Repeated regurgitation is not, and Merck associates persistent regurgitation after meals in snakes with cryptosporidiosis, which needs a vet.
None of these signs is specific, which is the honest reason a keeper needs a vet who sees reptiles: anorexia, lethargy and a dull appearance present in almost everything on this list, and the husbandry history is what narrows it down. A quarantine of 3 to 6 months for any new reptile joining a collection is also Merck’s recommendation, and is longer than most keepers expect.
Lifespan, and the records that make it easier
The RSPCA gives a corn snake lifespan of around 10 to 15 years and asks readers to be sure they can provide the care and cover the costs for the animal’s whole life before buying one. BGSU gives an average of 21 years. Both are credible, and the gap between them is roughly the gap between typical and well kept. Either way this is a decade or two of weekly feeding, daily temperature checks, and an enclosure that has to keep working while you change jobs, move house, and go on holiday. Snakes are quiet about being unwell, and most corn snake questions turn out to be questions about a trend. Three logs answer nearly all of them. Weight, which the RSPCA asks for regularly and which is the test that separates normal brumation from a problem; log it as a physical measurement and it becomes a line rather than a memory. Feeds, with prey size, date, whether it was taken and whether anything came back up, because a refusal in November against a year of weekly feeds is a very different fact from a refusal you cannot date. Sheds and enclosure checks, which on Creatures go in as a routine care record, where the care type list includes Shedding Assist (reptile) alongside Tank / Water Check (fish / amphibian / reptile), Parasite / Mite Check, and Body Condition / Weight Check. Those four cover most of a corn snake’s routine year, and recording the date and quality of each shed turns a vague sense that sheds have got worse into something a vet can use.

Is a 20 gallon tank big enough for an adult?
No, by current guidance. That figure is from older care sheets, BGSU’s 2016 record included. The RSPCA now asks for the snake’s full length by a third of its length wide and deep, and Merck allows 0.6 square metres of floor per metre of snake.
How long after feeding can I handle my snake?
Merck says 3 days, the RSPCA says 48 hours. The risk is regurgitation, because the meal is still sitting in the stomach. Take the longer figure if unsure.
My corn snake’s eyes have gone cloudy.
Usually the normal pre shed stage. Leave the snake alone and keep the humid hide damp. If it persists after the shed, those are retained eye caps, which the RSPCA says to deal with promptly and to have a reptile vet show you.
My corn snake has stopped eating in winter.
That may be brumation, which Merck’s table marks Yes for this species. The RSPCA’s test is weight: a brumating snake eats less but should not lose weight. Weight loss, a fast outside the cooler months, a first year snake, or any additional sign means a vet.
Can I keep two corn snakes together?
Keep them separately. The RSPCA says corn snakes lead solitary lives and are easier to health check alone, and Merck notes most non breeding pet snakes are best kept singly because trauma while feeding is common in groups.
Are corn snakes dangerous?
No. They are nonvenomous, and constrict wild prey at a size that poses no risk to a person. A frightened snake may bite, which is why the RSPCA teaches the S shaped posture as a signal to leave it alone.
