Gentile di Puglia
Gentile di Puglia is a southern Italian sheep breed associated with Puglia and the old fine-wool traditions of the region. The breed has Merino influence and was historically valued for a better fleece than many coarse Mediterranean sheep. It is a white, wool-oriented type, though lamb production and local farm use remain part of the practical picture.
Modern keepers usually approach Gentile di Puglia as a regional heritage and fine-wool breed rather than a high-output dairy or meat sheep. Flock selection may balance fleece, fertility, udder soundness, and resilience in dry southern conditions. Because historic fine-wool breeds often survive in smaller populations, source, registry status, and the breeder's selection goals should be checked carefully.
