Cheviot
The Cheviot is a hardy white-faced sheep from the Cheviot Hills, with erect ears, a clean head, active carriage, and a dense fleece suited to changeable upland weather. Cheviot-type sheep have influenced several regional strains, but the core idea is a resilient hill breed that can walk, forage, and rear lambs where lowland breeds may struggle. It is valued for thrift, soundness, and lively lambs.
Cheviot flocks should be assessed on the basics that matter in hill sheep: feet, mouths, udders, mothering, lamb survival, and ability to hold condition on rough grazing. The breed can also contribute vigor in crossbreeding, especially where producers want a hardy ewe or a moderate lamb. Because Cheviot names vary by region, source and strain are worth noting when comparing animals.
