German Wirehaired Pointer
The German Wirehaired Pointer is a rugged versatile gundog developed in Germany for pointing birds, retrieving on land and water, and tracking wounded game. In German working contexts it is closely associated with the Deutsch-Drahthaar tradition, though registry and testing systems can differ by country. It has a harsh weather-resistant coat, beard, eyebrows, strong bone, and a serious working expression. Liver and white ticking, roan, patches, and solid liver are typical.
Daily life with a German Wirehaired Pointer should include hard exercise and training that uses its nose. Many are warm with their household but can be intense, prey-driven, and reserved with unfamiliar people, so early socialization matters. The wiry coat needs brushing and occasional hand stripping or tidy trimming, and the beard collects water and debris. Breeders commonly screen hips, elbows, eyes, and inherited bleeding disorders where relevant. In tested working lines, field performance may strongly shape the pup a buyer is getting.
