Belgian Malinois
The Belgian Malinois is the short-coated Belgian Shepherd variety developed around Malines, or Mechelen, in Belgium. It is a medium-large, square dog with a fawn to mahogany coat, black mask, black ears, and a dry, athletic build. Originally a herding dog, the Malinois is now widely used in police work, military service, detection, search and rescue, and protection sports because many lines combine speed, grip, focus, and environmental confidence.
Those traits require careful placement. A Malinois from strong working lines may be restless, mouthy, intense about toys, and quick to react if its training and daily structure are weak. Successful homes provide planned exercise, impulse-control work, secure confinement, and skilled handling rather than relying on a backyard to tire the dog out. Short coat care is easy, though seasonal shedding can be heavy. Buyers should distinguish show, sport, police, and companion-oriented lines, and should look for health testing on hips, elbows, eyes, and temperament stability.
