Bloodhound

The bloodhound is a large domestic dog breed of the scent-hound group, developed in western Europe from medieval hounds kept for tracking game and people. Also known historically as the St. Hubert hound, it is built for endurance rather than speed: heavy bone, loose skin, long ears, deep folds around the face, and a powerful nose that can follow an old human trail over varied ground. Typical coat colors include black and tan, liver and tan, and red, with a short dense coat and a rolling, ground-covering gait.

Most bloodhounds are kept as trailing dogs, search-and-rescue partners, mantrailing sport dogs, or family companions by people prepared for their size and scent drive. They need secure fencing, leash control, and patient training, because a trail can override recall. The ears and skin folds require routine cleaning, and the breed's deep chest makes bloat awareness important. Responsible breeders screen for orthopedic and eye issues and select for stable temperament as well as working ability. A bloodhound puppy may look sleepy and soft, but adults are strong, vocal, slobbery, and highly motivated by smells.
