Jersey Giant
The Jersey giant is a very large American chicken developed in New Jersey as a heavy table bird before industrial broilers took over meat production. It was created from large breeds including Black Java, Black Langshan, and Dark Brahma stock, producing a long-bodied chicken with deep frame, calm temperament, and slow but substantial growth. Black, white, and blue varieties are commonly recognized, with black birds showing the classic glossy appearance that made the breed memorable.
Jersey giants need space, strong perches, and patient feeding because their size develops over time. They are not the fastest choice for meat and do not match commercial hybrids for feed efficiency, but they can be useful dual-purpose birds for keepers who want stature, steady brown eggs, and a docile flock. Breeders should avoid undersized birds and weak legs, since the breed depends on frame, depth, and soundness. Buyers should plan for higher feed use and slower maturity, especially if raising cockerels for the table.
