Ayam Cemani
The Ayam Cemani is an Indonesian chicken breed from Java, famous for fibromelanosis, the genetic condition that produces black pigmentation in feathers, skin, comb, wattles, bones, and much internal tissue. The name comes from Indonesian and Javanese wording connected to chicken and deep black coloration. Despite common myths, Ayam Cemani do not lay black eggs; eggs are usually cream to tinted.
Most keepers raise Ayam Cemani as ornamental, specialty, or breeding birds rather than as high-output layers. The main breeding challenge is depth and consistency of black pigment, since leakage of red, white, or pale skin reduces type. They need ordinary good chicken care: secure housing, dry bedding, balanced feed, and protection from temperature extremes. Buyers should be wary of exaggerated claims and should ask for clear photos of comb, mouth, feet, skin, and parent stock before paying specialty prices.
