Himalayan

The Himalayan yak is a high-mountain regional type of domestic yak, Bos grunniens, associated with Nepal, Bhutan, northern India, and the southern edge of Tibet. Rather than a single uniform herdbook breed in most countries, the name is often used for local yak populations shaped by steep terrain, cold winters, and seasonal movement between pastures. Himalayan yaks are compact, deep-coated bovines with a woolly undercoat, long guard hair, and a bushy tail; horn shape and color vary from native black and brown to white or golden-patterned animals in managed herds.

In human care, Himalayan yaks are best matched to cool climates, dry footing, and forage-based diets similar to other domestic yaks. Mountain households use them for milk, meat, fiber, packing, and dung fuel, and yak-cattle hybrids such as dzo and dzomo are important in some Himalayan farming systems. Buyers outside the region should treat the label as a source or type description and ask for parentage, health history, and evidence that the animals are adapted to local heat and pasture conditions.
