Jiali
Jiali yaks come from the high rangelands of Jiali County in Tibet's Nagqu area, where domestic yaks live at elevations and temperatures that challenge ordinary cattle. The breed is valued as a local plateau population rather than for a single show-ring look. Jiali animals are generally hardy, sure-footed, and thick-coated, with the black or dark brown hair typical of many Tibetan herds, although color and horn shape can vary within village-managed lines.
For keepers outside Tibet, the Jiali name is most useful when it is tied to known ancestry and selection for high-altitude performance. These yaks suit cold, dry climates, rough grazing, and low-input herd systems better than warm, humid farms. Breeding programs may focus on maternal ability, calf survival, milk for household use, and steady growth on native forage. Like other yaks, they need secure fencing and calm handling, but they should not be managed as if they were simply small cattle.
