Huanhu

Huanhu yak refers to a Chinese plateau breed associated with the grasslands around Qinghai Lake, or the Huanhu area, in Qinghai Province. These domestic yaks were developed in a cold, windy basin where animals must graze native alpine pasture and withstand long winters. They are usually described as sturdy, medium to large yaks with dense coats, strong legs, and the dark coloration common across many Tibetan Plateau herds, though individual managed lines may show lighter markings.

Huanhu herds are traditionally kept in range systems for meat, milk, hair, hides, and local transport. Practical management centers on conserving grazing land, providing winter forage when snow or ice blocks pasture, and avoiding heat stress when animals are moved to lower elevations. For breeders outside China, Huanhu is a regional ancestry claim rather than a color label, so purchase decisions should rely on credible records, physical soundness, and the animal's suitability for a cool, open setting.

Colors: Golden, Golden Royal, Golden Trim, Imperial Black, Imperial Trim, Native Black, Native Black Trim, Royal, White
