Arunachali
Arunachali yak is a local yak type from Arunachal Pradesh in the eastern Himalaya, especially high country around Tawang and West Kameng. In India it is treated as a distinct regional breed of domestic yak, Bos grunniens, shaped by cold, wet mountain grazing and the husbandry of pastoral communities such as the Brokpa and Monpa. Most animals are dark coated, often black or brown with long skirt hair and a dense undercoat, though lighter markings can occur. The breed is valued for milk, butter, meat, fiber, hides, transport, and manure in areas where ordinary cattle struggle at altitude.
Arunachali yak husbandry is usually seasonal, with herds moving between alpine pastures as snow, forage, and village needs change. Management depends on access to grazing, protection of calves during harsh weather, salt and mineral supplementation, and veterinary attention for parasites and infectious disease. The animals are not suited to hot lowlands for long periods. Conservation work and breed recording are important because herd numbers, pasture pressure, changing livelihoods, and crossing with other bovines can dilute local adaptation.
