Jiulong
The Jiulong yak is a distinctive breed originating from the Jiulong County in the Sichuan Province of China, renowned for its adaptability to the high-altitude environment of the eastern Tibetan Plateau. This breed stands out due to its robust frame and muscular build, which are essential traits for surviving in harsh, mountainous terrains. Jiulong yaks are notable for their long, shaggy coats, which provide insulation against cold temperatures and harsh winds. Their fur typically exhibits dark hues, predominantly black or brown, often accented with patches of white, enhancing their striking appearance.
Apart from their hardiness, Jiulong yaks are prized for their multifunctional utility among local communities. Their milk is particularly rich in butterfat, making it ideal for producing traditional yak butter and other dairy products. Additionally, Jiulong yaks are valued for their meat, which is lean yet flavorful, and their thick wool, which is used in making warm clothing and blankets. These yaks are also employed as reliable pack animals, capable of carrying heavy loads over rugged terrain, which makes them indispensable in the daily lives and cultural practices of the communities in their native region.
