Jiulong
Jiulong yak is a large-bodied domestic yak breed from Jiulong County in western Sichuan, on the eastern edge of the Tibetan Plateau. Among Chinese yak breeds it is often noted for heavier frame and meat potential, while still carrying the dense coat, strong limbs, and cold adaptation expected of Bos grunniens. Most animals are dark, commonly black or black-brown, with long hair on the shoulders, flanks, and tail; selection has favored animals that can cover mountain pasture and finish on rough forage.
Management is still yak management rather than beef-cattle management. Jiulong yaks need cool conditions, adequate minerals, and winter feed planning when alpine grass is buried or depleted. Their size can appeal to meat producers and breeders seeking growth, but buyers should also look at temperament, feet, fertility, and the performance of cows raising calves in real pasture conditions. In conservation or breed-improvement work, keeping Jiulong identity clear helps protect a regional genetic resource from being diluted by general yak crossing.
