Satin
A satin mouse is a fancy domestic mouse, Mus musculus, with a coat modifier that gives the hairs a bright glossy sheen. The effect comes from the structure of the hair shaft rather than from a single body color, so satin mice may be black, chocolate, blue, cream, red, lilac, Siamese, broken marked, or many other recognized varieties. Under good light, the coat can look polished or metallic, and pale colors may appear warmer or more luminous than their non-satin equivalents.
The shine does not change the basic needs of the mouse. Satin mice still require clean, dry housing, social arrangements suited to their sex, and a balanced small-rodent diet. The coat can show dust, oil, or urine staining easily, so cage hygiene matters more than bathing. In breeding programs, satin is usually evaluated along with body type, fertility, temperament, and coat density. Pet buyers should look for active, well-conditioned mice rather than choosing on gloss alone, since a thin or greasy coat can hide health problems.
